Data Collection for the North American Uechiryu Masters Line
A team has been formed to begin collecting information for a North American Uechi-ryu Masters Lineage Program. This program will be a "family tree" of the Uechi-ryu students that were trained by Sensei Mattson who was the first to teach students in North America and Sensei Thompson who also has a long lineage connected to his teachings.
We will need the cooperation of all the members of these forums to spread the word to all dojo, and all practitioners of Uechi-ryu in Canada and the US.
We will start the data collection as soon as I can get the database tables set up on my computer.
Information that would be neccesary to collect would be:
Student Name;
Date of first class;
Name of first Sensei;
First Sensei's dojo name and address;
Date of Shodan Test;
Sensei who signed Shodan Certificate;
Date of Nidan test;
Sensei who signed Nidan Certificate;
Date of Sandan test;
Sensei who signed Sandan Certificate;
Date of Yondan test;
Sensei who signed Yondan Certificate;
Date of Godan test;
Sensei who signed Godan Certificate;
Date of Rokkudan test;
Sensei who signed Rokkudan Certificate;
ETC.
Hopefully we can get a form up on Uechi-ryu.com that will allow the data to be easily sent to us.
Unfortunately there are many dojo who do not participate in these great forums and will not know that we are collecting this data. It will be necessary to have team representatives in all areas of North America to get to the Sensei's of these dojo to make them aware that their piece of the puzzle is needed to insure a complete and accurate list.
If there are any other volunteers, please e-mail me at BrocktonUKA@aol.com

Notice:
Thankfully, my main computer elected to crash two days after camp. Everything was "fried"! Fortunately it is under warranty, but the bad news is, I won't be able to do any site maintenance until I get the unit back.
Meanwhile, please forward the data to Len via e-mail. When I return from Atlanta and hopefully will have my computer back, I'll work with Harry Skeffington to set up a data collection site, where this information can be sent and displayed.
Also... Please don't limit the primary teachers to Jim Thompson and myself. There are many individuals who received their original training on Okinawa under many different teachers and Uechi-ryu recognized organizations, who returned to their home country and began teaching and promoting our art. Please make sure there is provisions to recognize and include these groups in this registry.

Sensei,
Sorry to hear about your computer. I know that you have a busy schedule the next few weeks.
I certaintly do not want to exclude anybody from this list. If there any studnets who received their certificates directly through an Okinawan Sensei, please send in that info also. This program will also be a registry of Uechi-ryu students in North America, but we could expand it to include every studnet outside of Okinawa. Lets start small and expansion is always possible. However, as we open up more areas for data collection, we will need representatives to collect data in those areas.
I will be able to collect the data immediately. If anyone wishes to e-mail me the data, please use the format listed in my first post above in this manner:
Copy the information section I outlined above and paste it into your e-mail message.
Then include your information after each line item. If you use a different font color for your information it will make it easier for data entry into the databse tables.
Information sent in this manner will have to be inserted manually into the database.
E-mail the information to the address listed in the first post.

Hello
Socrates, is it possible for me to do data entry on Access 97 and upload to Access 2000? There is a good possibility that I have Access 97 at home. Or maybe you can help me set up something in Access 97 that can be transfered to the Access 2000 dB you set up. This of course depending on me having Access 97 at home. I will know tonight.
Anyone have any suggestions or Access 2000 I could borrow?
Good Training, Peace Out....

To answer your question.
Yes, I can save the DB from 2000 into 97 and then pull the data back across at a later date.
To all,
Len's reviewing the first cut of the DB now, or will be shortly. Hopefully we can begin entry soon.

Len,
Would it be easier for me to send all of my dan students information along with mine to you than to have them send individual info.?
And what about current sensei information. Although I was not sensei Mattson's student from the get go (my misfortune), he has been my teacher for the past 5 years or so. Mmm?

Mike
Absolutely.
The best way to collect this information would be exactly as you have just stated.
I did not want to burden any Sensei with the gathering and supplying of this inforrmation themselves. It would, of course be the best way to accurately receive the data and at least keep your part of the tree intact and validated.
Now if all the other Sensei would be willing to send in their data...
Mike:
Send your training dates and Sensei information starting with the date of your very first class and who that Sensei was. If you do not have exact dates you can guess on the month. If you do not know, try to get the year as close as possible. Then follow the list above. If Sensei Mattson was your sponser (signed your certificate) for your Yondan, and Godan tests, then he would be the Sensei of record from that date until now.
To all Sensei:
All of your student information would follow the same criteria.
List the Name of the student: REQUIRED
Address: optional
Phone Number: optional
E-mail: optional
Date Started Training: REQUIRED
Sensei: Required
Dojo Name: REQUIRED
Dojo Address: Optional
Date tested for Shodan: REQUIRED
Sponsoring Sensei(signed certificate):REQUIRED
Date tested for Nidan: REQUIRED
Sponsoring Sensei:
ETC

"Socrates, who's better than you, huh?"
I knew you would come through for me with the answer I wanted to hear. I wasn't sure if Access was backwards compatible. This will work out great if I was smart enough to select Access when I installed Office.
I will post late tonight as to whether I have Access at home. Cross your fingers. I don't want to see you have to help out in the data entry in addition to what you are already doing for this project.
Good training, Peace Out...

Len.
I didn't know there was a group that was formed. So much for that. However, I heard from the grapevine that Access is being used and there is difficulty with multiple coherent users.
Depending on the Access version you are using, and they ARE different and sometimes incompatible, these two reference books in my library that I have used for developing relational databases proved to be invaluable. The first is for beginners who need a solid overview: "Quick Course in microsoft 97" ISBN 1572317221, and Microsoft Access Developers Handbook" ISBN 1572313587. You may be able to pick them, or the latest '2000 version of them at any Borders or B. Dalton.
Any SQL helps too.
Hope that helps you and have fun my good friend, Len.

It's LAC here.
Good evening! Just checked and I did install Access 97. So I am ready to go. Assuming we can make things work crossing over between release levels. I just read Allen's post. Sounds like there could be some difficulty.
Socrates I will email you my work phone so you can let me know what I will need to do on my end. Wouldn't want to have to walk through something via email. What a nightmare that would be.

Guys,
Reads like a team of expert volunteer programmers has been cemented for your fun project. If you are going to use Access, everyone should use the same version to insure fewer problems.
Also,
1)If I read correctly, the sole purpose of Ms. Access is to provide a list repository in a flat-file format, right?
2)What are you going to do with the data when you have collected it?
3)How are you going to maintain it?
4)How are you going to collect more data in the future?
These are just a few of the issues which need to be addressed before one jumps headfirst into plugging in data into a table or even selecting a database.
Granted, what you want to do reads like something simple, but unless youse guys are passing around information amongst yourselves in secret, there is no evidence of necessary "What If..." questions being proposed.
One real good piece of advice is don't advertise your willingness to freely pass around commercial software on the internet like this because, although unlikely, someone could get into trouble. Don't forget that this is a public forum read the world over by anybody and everybody. "What if..." there was even one reader who didn't like what youse are proposing or someone who just likes to stir up sh!t? Or there is a Uechika reader who works for Microsoft? That "someone" exists no matter where you go in life, so protect yourselves.

Mr. Moulton, I am aware of compatability problems between Access 97 and 2000, and I agree entirely that keeping to one version would make life much easier. I hear your final point loud and clear. there's no ashamed smiley - if there was place it here
There has been some discussion between myself and Len via email about some of the questions you raise. We are looking at creating a web based form to allow people with access to Mr. Mattson's web site to enter information and there will be some way to view it also. As to some of your other questions I'm going to need to leave those for others to answer.
Thank you very much for your input and I hope to hear more of it.
With Respect

If you team members would rather have a private discussion group than spread details publicly on the forum, then maybe GEM can set you up with one.
In terms of the "loud and clear..." I'm sure everyone owns their own software and know you were just joking around. I don't care one iota about anyone else's S/W ownership, but it WAS worth mentioning.

Information from the Black Belt Registry that is on Uechi-ryu.com will be entered into the database to be used to create the lineage chart.
If there is anyone who is NOT registered in this BB Registry and wishes to be included in this chart, please send me your info (e-mail address can be found in the first post of this thread) and I will include it with the others. The Sensei who sponsored you for your test (Instructors signature) is important. The Master Instructor who signed the certificate is not.
This chart is meant to be a FAMILY TREE. There will be two charts. Chart one will list a person under their first Sensei's name. Chart two will list their name and their rank under the Sensei who signed their certificate for that rank.
No addresses, phone numbers or dates of testing will be listed on ANY chart.
All dojo who supply their student information to this project will receive a copy of these charts.
Individuals may send in their information in case their dojo or Sensei does not want to participate. Duplicates will be removed from the database. Any discrepancy in the information will be researched and the individual and/or Sensei who submitted the info will be contacted to correct it.
I want this chart to be as accurate and all inclusive as possible. Here is a great a chance to get recognized as a Uechi-ryu/Shohei-ryu Dan student by future generations of students in this style.
Don't let your name be ommitted from this list. Send your info to the address above.
NOTE: Dodjo information has been forwarded from Jay Salhanick and Mike Murphy
If there is anyone who wishes to be taken off the list, for any reason, please send me an e-mail stating that you do not wish to participate, and I will remove your information from the database.
