Evolution of Martial Arts
Well we all know martial arts main reason long ago was to defend ur self in the best way.. sometimes become a stronger fighter.. and later making it a form of art obviously sometimes seeking a higher level of spirituality.
today a magority see it less of fighting more of an art in its own. ic martial arts evolving to much higher magority in art. today which a minority for some is the other way at times where becoming a stronger fighter is important. not saying martial arts was better back then or vise versa.
times have changed so ppl change.
i think this is because they had much rougher times when you had to defend ur self much more often. i dont think we have to worry too much some one is going to march in our home and creating choas..
sry if i wasnt technical on my words i didnt feel like spending too much time typing alot. i hope you know where im going...

Evolution of Martial Arts

Life and time varies when it comes to exposure to violence. The truth is that there isn't much opportunity to get good at anything if you are constantly surrounded by violence. It's all a crapshoot in the end. Even the best have bad days, and there isn't a 2 out of 3 when it comes to getting killed or permanently maimed.
What I'm trying to say is there has to be a certain amount of peace to have the time to develop a decent art, and there needs to be a certain amount of violence so that "what works" can be observed and documented.
Are times more peaceful now than before? Ask the Afghans. Ask folks in Ethiopia. Ask guys who live downtown near where I live. Violence is always there, somewhere... Some of us are luckier than others. Anyone that wants to get out of their comfort zone and test their mettle has the opportunity. Ask your local Police department or armed forces. Ask guards at your local prison.

yes very twu we live in a differ world where we no longer need our hands and feet.. instead having very lethal weapons and weapons of mass destruction where the threat of hundreds to millions an be at stake..
but back then ppl had a sense that they are capable to protect themselves at most for the most part..
today its worst where theres no defending a gun.. or an army.. plane... or bomb you get to feel very helpless.

Your post reflects the despair many feel when confronted with the almost overwhelming enormity of the current situation, where bombs and planes are falling out of the sky, poisonous letters are in the mail, the economy is shaky, etc.
However I think you err when you say we no longer need our hands and feet. Most people walking down the street are going to face a simple physical threat long before they ever get a poison letter or have to dodge a falling plane part.
Perhaps familiarity with your training, whatever level it is, has made you forget what a wonderful thing it really is.
Almost daily where I live the news carries stories of club attacks, muggings, shootings,
swarmings and other "common" assaults.
All these are the very things we train to confront.I'm not saying we would all perform perfectly under such assaults, but think back to when you knew nothing!
Even if all you could muster was some "dojo confidence",it could save you or yours.
And surely if an assault followed, you would be better off than a person who had NEVER thrown or taken a punch or kick, NEVER set foot in a gym or dojo, NEVER even been in a simulated combat and NEVER even thought about defending themselves, their loved ones or an innocent victim needing a human shield.
To me, martial arts training is about eye-to-eye threats, not geo-political ones.
Stand up for yourself, and you can stand up for someone in need.
Sometimes that's all it takes to put the attacker on the run.
Almost daily, people get chased, cornered, followed, challenged, and otherwise attacked by others, against whom their only defense may be...their hands and feet.
Train on, brother.

well I was comparing your ability to defend your self has depleated with someone pointing a gun at you.. or a nation/terrorist threatening to infest your nation with biological means.
and yes i am still aware that my martial arts training can be is very useful for me in variuos situations. it be able to use my body and most importantly my mind useful and effectivly.
and alot of a street fight is mental more than tournaments where you do not have to worry for your life at times. the amount if addrenaline greatly increases in those instances..

Love these spins on effectiveness versus art , In my opinion you can be an artist without being effective , just take up Ballet or Rythmic gymanastics
.....
If your not working at making yourself stronger better and more effective , your not a martial artist , to many people forget the martial .....
This is of course just my opinion and of the topic of this thread so i`ll lave my stirring there .

I thought Rhythmic gymnastics was Okinawinan kubodo set to music. I guess I've been duped again. Anyone want to buy an extra large pair of tights and a slightly used 12 foot ribbon?

well i train with weapons im sure ill never use them on anyone being the fact if I do its like using a gun on someone.. unless the other guy has a gun.. but i would never be carry a weapon around because its illegal to.. so i doubt ill ever use them..lol
i train with weapons because its a form of art.. not to be a stronger more deadly fighter.

dtk81-san,
I trained with weapons for the simple reason that several of them are generally available in real world scenarios. Jo, Bo, Tonfa (Tuifa like the police modified night stick), manriki kusari (short chain with weighted ends) often are available at certain times and in certain areas.
Remember, we train to be effective in situations where there are sometimes more than one opponent and being able to bring into play a force multiplier like a broomstick (jo) or a bicycle chain (manriki kusari) or a garden rake handle (bo), one betters their chances of dealing with multiple attackers and have a better chance of intimidating those who remain standing after the first couple go down.
Sorry for the run-on sentence there, but the point stands.
Weapon training isn't only for a carrying situation necessarily, but can often come into play in an impromptu situation where there are weapons of opportunity available.
Respectfully,
Lee Darrow, C.Ht. (Sandan, ret. sort of)

Ever willing to expose myself to yet more ridicule (nicely veiled, guys), I reiterate my point: What do you have when cornered, and all your fancy swingin',stabbin' and shootin' hardware is in your other pants?
I've been there.
All you have is your feet, fists, knees, elbows and gumption.
