Laura,

Monor clarification:

Know your basics "as well as" you know your own name----second nature Image

Base---in baseball for example---the place where you are safe from harm. In Jiu jitsu--the place where you launch your strategy from. A place of calmness in the midst of chaos.

Sorry for the confusion,
Mal

Basing out; to get low and spread your body outwards so that your opponent does not "tip" you over. Whenever you are told to mind your base, think of the bottom section of a pyramid...what structure is more stable than the pyramids?

Joe Pomfret

PS. Tell Max Bishob that he was never the #2 grappler in the world.

Hey Joe,

The trick is trying to maintain this "Pyramid-base" while in motion.

Along with base, the other two qualities are also important.

2.Mobility---comes in two flavors, mental and physical. You should not be mentally stuck on trying to apply one move or you may miss the better opportunity that the opponent gives you; then the body must be willing to follow the mind.

3.Fosused-calm---if you get too excited, you may lose your base and your mobility, not to mention your stamina. Let your opponent waste as much energy as possible while you relax and breath.

Jiu-Jitsu is not about matching strength against strength, it's about being suptle and gentle. Always remember that force does not exist until it meets resistance; offer no resistance, and you disarm your opponent if he is using force.

I am sure that there are many other principles in JJ besides these three, so tell me, what are y'all thinking out there?

Mal

P.S. Joe, has the Renzo seminar happened yet?

Malcolm-

To quote the most important Principle of Jujutsu that I've learned yet:

"The golden rule of combat is to apply your most powerful weapon to your opponents weakest point at his time of maximum imbalance."

I feel silly for responding, but...

If this guy was the # 2 grappler, who was # 1?

If this guy was the # 2 grappler...in the WORLD...which of the many Gracies or olympic wrestlers did he defeat to gain this title?

I think it's funny, very funny, when people say, "I'm the best in the world."

Just a little reminder to those out there who may be new to the forums. You are free to express your opinion, so long as it doesn't border on insulting. Remember, no matter how long you have been training, we can all learn through open and honest dialogue in the forums. When it turns the other way, someone is going to get cyberflushed as Sensei Van says.

Sooooo, let's keep it cordial.

BTW, I know I ain't number 1 :-)
