Well. Perhaps not so strange..I agree .Adois
Where PC originated and How it Kills Free Speech
"For all the good P/C and privacy laws may do in cases like Ian's..."
Well, sorta. Actually there aren't any privacy laws pertaining. Regarding addiction, I actually don't know what the pertinent privcy laws are, but I do know people can't beat their addictions if they are chased from their professions and spend all their time in jail. And with the marijauna, I'm still unconvinced it's morally worse to distribute that than plain old tobacco. That's said to kill 1/3 its users and harm most of the rest.
One of my finer distinctions was that sticking up for people who are getting picked on *isn't PC.* It's just asking for a little empathy and cilivity, a heck of a lot like asking someone to clean up their own trash. People don't have a right to go around saying mean or insensitive things without facing the resulting opnions, claiming their speech has been somehow limited when it hasn't. All of the bluster about supposed PC is nothing more than getting offended at someone's speech which is all the accused PC person did themselves.
Fundamentally I think real PC tries to shut down discourse about important problems and substitute behavioral rules instead. Prime example of real, dangerous PC: students shouting out the lectures of a BLACK professor who used the term colored people instead of people of color. 1) trying to shut down discourse 2) trying to enforce behavioral rules.
Right?
Well what happens when a single high school student who knows s/he's GLB is surrounded by incessant comments like "you're such a fag!" or "that's so gay!" whether they're aimed at the person or not? Youth play games like smear the queer and capture the fag, and growing up in the midst of such pastimes while GLB is basically like growing up an unknown, suspected or known racial minority in a setting where your peers use the most offensive ethnic slurs known, to your face.
In other words, kids and others by their language make their GLB peers afraid to be honest about who they are or speak their minds. If you open your eyes the analogy is fairly obvious: Reverse PC is already active in our schools, and its probably worse because it makes people feel unsafe rather than disapproved of.
Re: the racial slurs, it's polite not to repeat them, but c'mon, children face them everyday, and no one's covering their ears. How would you feel if you had a black or mixed race kid who heard "black!" shouted out everytime they walked down a school hallway?
It's becoming less common, but this is daily life for your average GLB kid, and it *****, and it is going to continue until enough people speak up when they hear such things ("that's not nice") and it starts to get looked down on.
Hence my tedious and repetitive posts :0)
As Troll points out, we all say stupid things now and then, myself included. We just have to try and figure out when that is and see if we can improve it.

ecalavia,
I think alot of what you are presenting is a result of privacy laws. Less political correctness.
In Washington, we cannot disclose information about substance dependence, or psychiatric care without expressed written consent. The only exception is when the person represents an immediate danger to self, others, or property. Extremely frustrating.
On the bright side at least addiction was removed from the list of "disabeling conditions" wrt ssi/ssdi
Interesting thread here.
Civility cannot be mandated. We must teach to our children. Unfortunately, there are more entertaining distractions out there.

"Cases like Ians" Sorry, I lumped your drug addict MD together with your homosexual issue

Actually, the point was that the phrase "PC" applies to *neither* case, but, minor point. Toodles.
