The Spirit Dragon

Post by Bill Glasheen »

The Spirit Dragon by Kerry Morgan. (Moonfire Publishing)

Airplane rides are good for intimate conversations with people you've never met and will never meet again (I have no idea why...) and catching up on personal reading. I got halfway through The Spirit Dragon on my ride to the New England Uechi promotional, and the rest of the way through it on my business trip here to Phoenix.

Yes, the weather is great here. Sorry about the ice, New Englanders...

Kerry was kind enough to donate a copy of the book to me for my perusal and review. I am glad I got the opportunity to go through it.

Let me start off with a negative, because it will bug you if you pick up this Moonfire Publication edition. It does't take long reading the book before you realize that there was a serious problem with editing of this manuscript. It's a shame, because the material is really good and I would want my son to read this. The three most prevalent problems - and they absolutely are prevalent - are:

* use of threw instead of through

* use of to instead of too

* an excess use of commas.

In any case, I'm sure that there are half a dozen Uechika (myself included) that wouldn't mind being given digital copies of the manuscript to do some fairly basic editing. It isn't rocket science; this is a kid's book after all (target audience around 10 years of age). It would take more than an afternoon to edit 148 pages but...the effort would be worth it. Kerry tells me that things didn't quite work out right with her publisher, and she's trying to arrange to have things redone.

Nevertheless, this is a very, very nice piece of work. What Kerry and/or a publisher lack in spelling and basic punctuation is made up for with a very imaginative plot. The main character is an overweight child by the name of Brandon who is being mercilessly picked on by a delinquent kid in his school (Peter). Interlaced in the plot are Brandon's dreams, where he confronts riddles presented to him by animal characters found in the Uechi martial arts system (first a tiger, then an crane, and subsequently a dragon). Brandon is lucky enough to stumble on a martial arts school where he begins to learn Uechi karate, and the puzzling dreams and his life slowly begin to fall into place. One might think that (s)he could predict the ending, but it isn't quite so obvious as it is in The Karate Kid. Kelly's imagination provides a challenge for the young reader, and the benefits of practicing martial arts are conveyed in ways that everyone can appreciate. The fighting is almost an afterthought. Parts of me wonders if Kerry has ever studied any basic psychology - particularly adolescent development and dream analysis. While it isn't that sophisticated, a young kid reading the book might just have a spark placed within that one day could grow into a love for behavioral sciences.

I am going to have my own 10-year-old son read the book to see what he thinks. I am thinking he will enjoy it. I will want to tell him to look for the spelling and punctuation issues. Who knows - maybe I can make THAT an exercise for him, and turn the lemon into lemonade. In any case, I think most kids studying Uechi ryu - or any martial art for that matter - would enjoy this book. Even an older kid like me...

Oh and one last thing... Kerry plans at least two more books in a series. They too should be worth the purchase and a read.

Glasheen Sensei,

I too received a copy of Kerry's book. Your comments seem very similar to what I told her. I believe Kerry said that she had problems with the publisher and hence the typo/grammar type errors. I'm sure she'll post with more detail about it when she sees your post.

Like you I thought it was a really nice kids book. It's on the list for my 7 year old son.

Wow, had to re-register- sheesh that sucked...Anyway!!!

Thank you Mr. Glasheen for being so honest. I self-published the book, and like many others, got screwed by the printing company when they didn't include my hours of editing. The printing is for sure a lemon. I'm fighting with the company to have it fixed, but I'm anxiously awaiting news for future publication, traditionally. Spelling was my worst subject in school, grammar a close second, though oddly enough in creative writting I excelled.

The story was written from my own life experiences. The behaviors, etc. are a mix of my own lessons learned, and healing through learning Uechi. I hoped to pass on some of this knowledge, life experience to children, in a way they could relate to. In a language they would understand. Maybe this first edition, with all it's mis-spelled words and incorrect puncuation can be that language, until I have it re-printed.

The message is what I hope children (and adults for that matter) will pick up on.

I have seen many, many posts, have recieved (i before e except after c right?) so I have received several emails regarding children dealing with bully's at school etc. I went through the same thing, only I didn't have Uechi-ryu to help me back then. I hope that Sensei's and parents will be able to read this post, and know that, there is a book out there, that might help their kids, while entertaining them, in the fashion they seem to be into these days. The rest of the story comes from my Sensei's teaching, and his life experiences. Put the two together- WHOA. LOL I'd have to include Dr. Phil McGraw in there too (two o's for "also" right? see I'm learning! LOL)

I appreciate you mentioning the story on your forum Mr. Glasheen. I also (honestly) appreciate the opportunity to explain the printing situation.

Thanks-
Kerry-[/b]

Fair is fair, Kerry. Rather than rush back and cover up MY OWN typos, I'm going back and editing them to appear in red - in all their ugly glory. What's good for the goose...

It was a rare pleasure to read your work, Kerry. What you have that makes the work so good is imagination. We all have interesting life experiences, but few can package them in such a compelling manner. No university education can teach what you have as a natural gift.
I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.

I was making jest at myself because I really am so bad at grammar and spelling- and then I just thought it cute because people say "Kelly" when speaking to me- all the time I just about answer to it, and at first I missed it LOL. Doesn't matter- It was funny- And I am soooo bad it wouldn't have been "my" book if it hadn't been riddled with errors. I very much appreciate the fact that you didn't just "say it was cool" but really took the time and attention to "notice" all that stuff. Showed me that you "really" read the book! How cool and humbling is that! (*please note-by saying this I'm not implying anyone else "didn't" really read it-not here in these forums/Uechi at any rate)

The other things you said- brought tears to my eyes Mr. G- When someone of your stature recognizes my story, and says that- it's just really touching. The story means a great deal to me, and your complete and honest assesment of it- means a great deal also.

I say again- thank you

K-

Incidently- I don't take offense when people notice all the errors- for one thing- they are right- and for another- I just finished a DragonLance book written by two very famous authors, with almost as many errors, missing letters etc. in it as mine- Their book was larger but every other page had an error- so I know it happens- also I know how many errors I DID correct- sent back to have them fixed- only to find they sent the finished product without a final look-through and all that- It was truly a learning experience. Hopfully, as I mentioned- I'll be picked up by a larger company who will help me edit etc.

Kerry,

Looks like you're getting quite a fan club with the book! ;-) Good job!
(Now just find a good publisher, and point them to this thread).

I can't speak for anyone else, but if you need a letter to a publisher let me know and I'll type one up. I"m sure you'll get other offers here also. don't know if it will help, but I'm sure it can't hurt.

Kerry,

Thanks for the copy of the book. I have already replied in private, but wanted to show my admiration of your work in a more public forum.

Yes, there are some spelling problems. And maybe some grammatical issues that need to be addressed. Life goes on and printing companies will do their best to do as little as possible.

But the STORY is a wonderful exploration of a young person's growing through study of the martial arts, the conversion of an enemy to a friend and the development of self esteem by an insecure young person.

As a therapeutic metaphor, I found it highly useful and, should I ever return to clinical practice, I will certainly keep a copy around for younger (and maybe some older) clients' use.

Your depictions of the mystic animals (Tiger, Crane and Dragon) as well as the Sorcerer were quite enjoyable, particularly that yappy Mr. Crane! ;)

I would be delighted to offer a letter of recommendation, under my professional stationery, should you go for a reprint or publish under a new publisher.

Can't wait for the next volume in the series!

Great work and a credit to Uechi-Ryu and the Martial Arts in general!

Sincerely,

Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Hey- hey

Guess what! My fight with the company that published/printed my book- may be paying off, due to a suggestion made by Ms. Dana Sheets!

One of the owners of the company I went through has emailed me regarding my "letter to the Better Business Burou" and she has offered to re-print the book, making the necessary corrections that I pain-stakingly sent them, which they neglected to include.

I reposnded with being willing to listen to what she has in mind. We'll see where it goes from here- but I may just have a "perfected" copy of my book, after-all.....

Cool huh!

(couldn't find the spell check on this thing LOL please excuse mis-spellings LOL)

Kerry

This is wonderful.

If there's any other revisions that they will alllow, let me know. It wouldn't hurt to have one more set of eyes going over the book. I would do that if necessary.

Good luck. In the mean time, I have the rare, limited, signed, early edition. Imagine that!
