Just curious...
Has anyone ever added music to their practice at home? Does it help with developing speed? Is it a taboo thing? Music/karate-
Any comments on what you do for home practice?

Uechi Music
Hello Kerry:
I have incorporated music into my Uechi classes for years now.
Specially the kids classes. The kids love running and working out
to music. It really winds them up and gets them going.
I also have found it works great in a sparring class… The same
result, as the kids. Its gets the adults really active and going.
It also makes them feel good….
I have also designed synchronized Uechi kata to music. I have done this
for demonstrations, and for some of my students that compete in
open tournament competition. They have musical form divisions.
In many tournaments. The katas are custom designed, they are
not always traditional Uechi kata. Many time they are a mix of 3-4
katas, designed into one tournament kata.
Note: These tournament katas were not designed for traditional Uechi
tournaments. They were designed for the open tournament circuit.
Best - Jay

How wonderful! Do you have anything on video tape I could maybe peek at? I brought the question up,, really, because my huusband and I went dancing and both found we were "dancing" Uechi moves! LOL I've found it a great way to work out/practice at home.. It's fun
We have considered doing something similar with our dojo- with the begining and secondary excersizes. Had wondered if anyone else had tried before too-
Thank you for the reply!

Uechi Music
Hello Kerry:
I have never done any commerical video tapes of any kind. Try to use music with a good beat... Try eye of the tiger, and many disco hits... Not all disco is dead... Some still lives... IN kids classes try using old movie hits like "Ding dong the witch is dead... also rocken robin,,, roll over betovhen,, Kids love it...
You refered to dancing... I remember many years ago, we had many dojo party's at GM's,, old Hancock St dojo (Mattson Academy)... We must of had 3-4 partys a year,, they were great... The 70's were wild... Even GM was a party animal back then...
I remember one year I was out of the dojo floor dancing,, and I also found myself using some kata moves to the music... Clarence Von Wilder, and Jimmy Maloney both came over to me and gave me a big hug and said,, Dame,, you do kata better on the dance floor then , then in class....
Good Luck - Jay

LOL
actually I love all music. "Cellllelllbrate good times come ON!!!" That's got to be a good one!
My husband has spoken of parties back then... And though he rocked with the best of them- he's calmed down too. LOL (cept when I can get him out there dancen!).... (Steve Morgan is husband/Sensei)
Thanks for the ideas!
I wasn't thinking really of commercial- just thought somebody had given you a tape you might let me peek at- we've done some really cool demonstrations- some for elaborate test nights- (earned my green belt on one of these nights- a full 7 months pregnant even!!1 That's dedication for ya! LOL) Some of the parents vidoe taped it- and gave us copies.
I'll be teaching for my husband very soon here- for he's needing surgery- and I think I will shoot for something like this. That's also why I thought I'd throw the idea out and see what people thought.
Thank you much for I was a bit nervous to teach- (I-kyu) but it will be good training towards my black test too!
I think I even have a couple CD's with Kool n the Gang and even K C and the Sunshine Band- this is gonna be fun! LOL
smiling-

Hi Kerry,
Although we don't use music in the dojo ... At home I've practiced kata and shadow boxing to the tunes of MORTAL KOMBAT as well as to the meoldic tunes of ENYA and other Celtic music. Just whatever moves me in the moment. Mortal Kombat blared over my radio all the way to my black belt test to "pump me up."!
Good luck on the teaching. I started formally teaching as an Ikkyu and it taught me about what I knew as well as what I didn't know (still holds true for today). You may find that you can tell a student how to do something ... so just so them and let your movements be your words.
Sending light & energy to your husband for a speedy healing!
