'Whatever comes to mind' Training?

Post by jsykes »

I am a newcomer to Uechi-Ryu and have taken a few training classes. One thing that bothers me is the manner of training. I get the horrible feeling that when I go I am being shown 'whatever comes to mind' from the sensei/instructor. One day I was trained in Sanchin stance and the next time I was trained on kicks. It just feels so random! Is this the usual manner of teaching, or is there a set curriculum that should be followed?

Hang in there, jsykes. There's a lot to learn!
Generally the main structure will be the traditional warmups; after those, the teacher may take the class in any direction to touch on the many things to follow, without boring some or leaving others behind.

There is NO WAY that every component of Uechi Ryu could be covered in a single class, unless the class were to be 6 hours long, or only 30 seconds of each were covered in a 1.5 hour class: both useless scenarios.
But I promise you this: if you leave the class determined to work on what you were shown, it WILL come 'round again!
And you may find you were the ONLY one working on it!
The trick is to keep working on all the various aspects you learn (at class ) at HOME, between classes. Don't think the topic is brought up and forgotten, it's very unlikely.
Hope this helps!
