Some time back, I took my boys to see the movie Pearl Harbor. They were quite young at the time (8 and 3 I believe). While it was lacking somewhat as a historical documentary, it did get my number 1 son asking lots and lots of questions afterwards. In the restaurant after the movie, I actually got the waitress to give me some extra paper placemats and crayons so I could put together the maddening plot of WWII.
The only reason why we don't have photos so moving of other such senseless attacks is because we were lacking the video/film technology (and in many cases, a free press).
We should not forget that NYC was not the only victim of hate and extremism. Remember The Third Reich. Remember Pearl Harbor. Remember Pol Pot. Remember the centuries of atrocities in the Balkans. Sadly, the list is endless.
This is why my parents wanted me to study history.

Bravo, Bill
Again your explanation is erudite, clear, pithy, and insightful. Your children are fortunate. Add to the endless and vastly forgotten evils our species is capable of the trainingg ground of Nazi genocide: the WW II Armenian million person massacre; eradication of the indigenouse people of the Amazon, etc., etc. The threnody of cries of the innocent is legion and painful to the civilized.
Among the finds in cognitve research is the somewhat recent discovery of the 'empathy' part of our cortical miracle. Some do not seem to have it.
The Bonobo have the correct (and most charming ) way to temper aggression. It is humerous to think what we would be like if our ancestors had inherited a portion of those traits. A recent then President might not have bitten off more than he could chew, so to speak [GRIN]
Well done.

September 11th will stay in my mind forever. I'll never forget when I was leaving my house to go to the dentist and just catching that a plane collided with the world trade center. I had been to the top of this building before and had seen how close airplanes flew to it and just made the assumption that some poor private pilot had accidentally hit it. This was at around 9 am. I went to my Dentists' office and the television was on in the lobby with the news announcing that a second plane had just slammed into the world trade center. At that moment I fathomed the potential enormity of what had happened and what else could potentially happen. I remember hearing about the Pentagon and then the crash in Pennsylvania. I recall wondering what else was going to happen. Would there be suicide bombings here in my small town in Roanoke VA? Would my parents be ok?... after all they are only miles from the Pilgrim Nuclear power plant in Plymouth Mass. I'll never forget the erie silence that hung over the entire country when the airline industry was grounded. Most importantly , I will never forget the immages of PEOPLE jumping from the buildings to escape death from flames. I plan on sending this link of that tribute to everyone in my e- mail adress book. It is a sobering reminder of why our toops are in the Middle East. I shudder to think what could happen if a terrorist friendly country could do with nuclear technology...<rant>(even Hillary Clinton agreed 2 nights ago on HBO that Iraq was seeking to build nuclear devices..so spare me that BS about the President lying about Iraqs intent to get nuclear technology) </rant>
Intel (not the chip maker)
The Intelligence Community has the thankless but satisfying job of gathering 'pixels' of information, colorations and doubt factors, and like the pointelists placing them on a canvas for the National Command. The successes are never heralded, the failures are the life blood for the whining the anti-American crowd.
Great recent cartoon shows a Peter Jennings type at the 1945 fall of Berliln caviling that there was no evidence of the Hitler and the Nazi's having made an atomic bomb and so Roosevelt lied to the American People in starting WW II.
And, in passing, having been one of the 'retirees' from the Community 9 years ago when All American 'I feel your pain and your women' Bill and his cohorts extirpated the established capabilites of the Intel Agencies; and to top it off the Dems are then, with a straight face, bleating on the weakness of American Intelligence. Caligula, where are you now that we need you [GRIN]. He knew how to treat the Senate in Rome!
So, I join those of us who will never know the heros who gave their lives so that greater disasters have not and might not befall our wonderful Nation in a moment of thanks for all the Black Stars etched in marble and those not there etched in our hearts.
