If it takes about 1-2 years to learn adaquate self defense, what is the most important reason people practice for a lifetime?

Why is there so much emphasis on the physical application of the style?

It's because we inhabit a physical body!

:D The mind is a function as are emotions but the body is the only way we can express ourselves initially because whatever "WE' is 'WE' is in the body! This means that we are alive. If you are not alive, you do not exist. To exist, we need a physical body. It's that basic! Without life, you are not there! There is more to this, of course, but that's it for now. Halford

I'm not sure you CAN learn adequate self defense in 1-2 years, unless you're carrying a knife or other weapon maybe. I still wouldn't want to bet my health on my martial skills. Maybe I'm a late bloomer.

I also don't think its exercise. I mean, we could do aerobic exercise which would be better for us, or dedicated strength training, which would be more efficient for that end--but neither of these things would be as thrilling. Karate is in general fun, while that fun may be a nonstandard kind of fun involving challenge, fear, self improvement, and competition in varying amounts for the individual person.

I couldn't have said it better Ian.

The top three choices on this poll were all good choices in my book. I have some good friends in my Karate class ... it almost is my social life outside my marriage.

It's good learning to kill with my bare hands as well

But... the physical aspect of it is what keeps me doing it. It gives me a reason to weight lift, diet(though difficult), and keep aerobically fit. I want to be good at the only sport or physical activity that I have ever really had any passion for.
