Thanks Fred , I`m serious about finding a Gi that`ll remain intact , I find grappling a huge part of my Karate these days and the lighter Gi`s arnet up to it .
Anyone who has experience with a good crossover Gi I`d be gratefull for recomendations .
I`m not really onti skimping on gi`s , Ive found good quality gi`s pay for themselves over the cheap and Nastys . I`ll see if I can find an HSU and take a look

This is where I get my HSU

I like to buy from them because I believe the money goes to Olympic athletes who really don't get any support.
Get the single weave, the double weave is unnecessary, It's a competition thing.

Dana,
Thanks for the history. As i have read much of the same also, however, i am sure that many have not.
Possibly white was adopted at the same time era of ranking for various reasons.
However, i often question why so many Uechi dojo's are so against the wearing of black. Espescially of the higher ranks who may have that preference. Possibly it is just to keep it uniform throughout the students. Or the belief that it is truly "Traditional" as taught to many of us.
Fred,
I was not aware of a 6 kyu 12 dan level being present in Judo or any other systems. In my previous years of research and study, i had found that in the original adapting of rank it was primarly from Judo systems.
However, i had read that the ranks only went as high as 5th dan being recognized as Master. Later it was believed that over the years (in which it took) levels 6th to 10th was added.
I guess that some were not content with being 5th dan masters when others were obtaining rank of equal over time.
After all, i believe that ranking of both kyu and dan levels is less than 100 years old.
Food for thought.

Good Post Gary , i agree the ranks were added later
I beleive that Funikoshi never graded anyone above 4th Dan
Rank Inflation it seems .
that and a lot of the original second generations took relatively few years to acheive rank ....
more tradition .
Of the track of white gi`s though I suspect
now we have so many umpteenth dan`s running around it is no longer a indication of understanding but rather tenure , and even sometimes worse .
the rank gi stuff being 100 years old is genourous , I`d say 50 maybe 60

Hey Stryke: I started with a GeneSport Gi, kind of lightweight, $30 CDN, it lasted about until my final White-belt rank (green strip over 3 green bars);
(Oct '98 until June 10/2001.)
Then I got a 100% cotton "Kamikaze" size 4, made in Canada.(Green belt self-present.)
On several very hot training days I actually wished someone COULD rip a hole or two in it! It's really excellent quality; Montreal-source, I think.
I expect it'll last me through my (hopefully soon) Brown years, then maybe I'll splurge on another.

There are a lot of descent Gi's out there for fair to middle pricing that hold up well. However, most importantly, you must what is also "comfortable" in it's fit for "you" as all gi's do not fit or feel alike.
I myself prefer the brushed cotton (softer) gi's that are not made by all manufactures.
Also how often you were it and how you wash and dry them effect the wear and tear. To much bleach is said to make the fabric brittle. Easy ripping.
14 ounce heavy weight often come with 5 row stitched cuffs and collars. 12 and under are not as tough.
Best regards,

I don't know what kind of gi's you fellahs are wearing... In my opinion it's the perfect sweat suit. You don't particularly care about what it looks like, and it stands up to someone tossing you across the room over their head using it as a handle. I've had all my uniforms for years, and only the lighest weight ones I don't like (because they tear and tend to get see through!
) A good medium to heavy weight uniform is ideal for some rough and tumble play. If you get hot, take up gardening instead.
Treat your uniform like a pair of cheap sweat pants. It's made for it.
