Hi Dana , Rick is indeed incredible to work with , he said great things about the kata you sent him witch I`m looking forward to seeing , thanks for sending it .

personally I see striking with the fingers very valid , We do it all the time in Banff and Ive never conditioned them , I actually find it difficult to imagine breaking them , of course it`s in the context of neck , armpit , soft tissue etc , excessive force would just cause them to curl into a fist .

I do curl my fingers when i nukite though for this purpose , It may have something to do with hand strentgh also though , considering I`m a Tradesman and using them constantly who knows , but it surprises me others dont see them as valid weapons .

After reading this thread I nukite`d (that a word  ) the heck out of my forearm and Quad just to see if I wasnt delusional ... ouch

Dana , series 4: here's a clip to try and show what I'm trying to communicate

http://banffuechiryu.tripod.com/fatman.wmv

****note I've deleted all of the mall clips from my server and replaced them with this one clip:

http://banffuechiryu.tripod.com/seisan_apps_final.wmv

None of the other clips I have postedon this thread are functional

Dana some thoughts on series 1

http://banffuechiryu.tripod.com/bushikenbuisness.wmv

kind of funny posting these cheesy clips on the film makers site.  but it's a better way to communicate @ times. Especially considering we all speak a diferent dialect.

Greetings – If you look at the fatman technique there is a choke in this movement, as well, watch the video so kindly provided, when Uke , is leaning forward, and the nukite is used , the top of his head can be trapped against the body (stomach) of the person applying the technique,
the ippon ken can be used to apply pressure into the sides of the neck as shown, but what if Uke’s head is trapped against your body (the stomach), a slight slide forward will provide forward pressure which bends the head downward and draws the neck into the rising pressure of the arms
and hands, this is a variation of a guillotine type choke (done standing), using the knuckle to apply pressure into the neck rather than the forearm. This is most often
done as a naked choke, which works the same way , the forearm of say the right hand, slides under the neck, the hands clasp together, and upward pressure against the neck is applied, The head as above is trapped between a downward pressure caused by your forward movement as the top presses against your stomach and upward pressure
as your arms raise,(ala-Seipai kata) , you will find that as in the video , Uke becomes very easy to move, he will rise on his toes to avoid the pressure against his neck,(which in this case he can not escape).
The next movements in the kata could be done to the same person, releasing him, and causing his head to rise, then finishing up with the next sequence, (as in the video) But I think this regroups your techniques a bit

The other good news is that it is a nice technique even if Uke does manage to take you off your feet

see picture 3-42
Now I personally HATE going to the ground with someone, and wrestling around, But, I suppose it could happen, and this will land me in as a good a position as any,

instead of going to ground I would much rather
move to the side as in the fatman clip, and
then finnish him.
anyway, thought I’d point out the choke.

Romney^..^ (ps, nice clip thanks)

A most excellent clip! I need to get my home computer setup to make little movies like that. It's so much more clear than just text. And nice dojo!

And those strikes into the neck do hurt. I'd write more but I'm off to sparring class.

Dana

Just wanted to say thanks to you for starting this discussion.

And thanks to everyone else for contributing.

I come from a Goju background and one of the reasons that I enjoy this board so much is getting a chance to see the
"Hows" and "Why's" of a an art so close to my own core art.

Yet in some ways very different.

The approach and applications concerning Seisan you folks have been going thu have been through, detailed and very interesting.

They have left me going from scratching my head thinking "how is that going to work??" to getting a (small) "eureka" momment where I "get it."

Again, VERY helpful to see the approach and rational of a "sister art."

I sometimes get too caught up in how "I" do it. And don't spend enough time considering other methods, applications, and approachs.

Helps to be reminded.

Thanks again.

Hey Laird
I know that you'like this :multi: .and you can try it on Marcus .you seem to like fingers.next time you get an armlock/comealong on him ...just hook your index finger into the corner of his eye( ....only needs very small pressure)....it's surprisng how compliant folks become when you do this
