... oversized traps is an artifact of Okinawan jar (kami) training. Interestingly enough, by today's modern weight training and bodybuilding standards, the physiques of old school Uechi Ryu would be considered lacking in symmetry. Modern training equipment allows for better balance of strength development, leading to better performance and lower injury rates.

The movement (not a shoulder roll) has a specific purpose, not for demonstrations..Modern training equipment has nothing to do with learning the movement or why its used....

Instead of speculating, why not visit Toyama Sensei and ask him? 8)

As a guy who has promoted a tournament or two and helped at many others I would have to say looking at the numbers of competitors that the tournament on the tape was a financial loss and not a success.

I enjoy the tape for the demonstrations on it, but I can't see how it was successful unless they charged each person $500 to compete.

The New England Junior Series in it's 4th year is the most successful Junior series and George Mattsons event is possibly the longest running event outside Okinawa.

If you are under 17 and want to compete come to New England.
If You live in New England download an application and come compete.
If your over 17 and want to compete let us know, we may add more ages in the future. But leave your politics in your dojo please.
