Stryke - i like your post and am empathetic of you when you talk about trying to think of application while doing a form and how confusing it is! I have a lot of trouble with that. Got any ideas to help with focusing? Sometimes,in our class, we try and distract each other while doing kata and i always lose focus... WHAT CAN HELP THAT?

Id recomend not to think about what your doing for a while , Instead concentrate on what you feel like when you do the techniques , how your body feels , are you tense , are you relax , do you feel loose and fluid , or rigid and unmovable , to me the applications can vary so much from the kata it just confuses me to try visulaise an oponent . Body feel and attitutude are the keys to kata in my opinion .

Great thread youve got going here Image

Hello again Heather and Stryke!

Heather - thank you for the explanation! Sound pretty cool. How can you obtain this? I do not think i have ever been able to watch a form and tell (sense, feel, etc) what you are describing. Seems neat though. Is it something you just acquire with time in the martial arts? Interesting in itself though. p.s. i like your play on words! show/do Image

Stryke - Thank you for the thoughts. I appreciate your ideas and I will try to do my kata without thought of the moves and more on me physically. I am almost definately tense even though my memory of the sequence is really good (or at least i have been told that) Thank you for the compliment on my thread! I appreciate it.

Hope to get more feedback ~ SJR

I think Van is the one who contains the keys to the ultimate secrets of kata transformation into fighting practice, Carlos.

Hi Allen:
I have practiced per years with very powerfull okinawan teachers in its katas, but Van Sensei with its TC, has obtained that the student prints to his kata the power maximun, that that student can give, applied to the sequences of the kata, where must be applied.
the difference is, the okinawan are strong, hard but uniform, without variation, all its kata is hard, powerful, Van Sensei can maintain the smooth one, where the kata is smooth and it can give but the impressive one you to be able, where the kata must be powerful
My respect and affection.

"C'est si bon" = It's verrry good.

And yes - staying relxed in order to generate power is the flipside of only tightening up when you get hit -- which often will need to happen at the end of your strike - because attacking is when you are the most vulnerable.

Ever hear that song? It is hauntingly beautiful. Does anyone know how to post the music to it? Image

HI Sunsu...sorry I took so long to get back to you...been really busy lately.

I try to pick a wide variety of people to work on....male/female/short/tall....you name it.

The reason being is that you never know who is going to attack you until it happens....we have 12 year old committing murder these days, so whose to say what kind of person will do it.

To pull my applications into my kata practice, I always choose a technique that I want to work on....say the "down block" is for today...then every time I do that technique in the kata, I envision what I am doing for my self defense. I only work on one technique for that day on that move....for instance...I have been teaching Pinan Shodan to my students...so every time I do a "down block" I envision grabbing the opponent behind the head and pulling them down and breaking their neck.

The next time I work on the kata I can pick a different technique or just a different application for the same thing.

Make sense?
