Hey Bill, my Dad was stationed in Japan for 4 years. When we came back to the states, we moved to Hampton, Virginia and lived there from1960-1964. That is interesting we could have grown up only blocks from each other.....small world. We were in a subdivision somewhere off Mercury Dr.

While we lived there my parents had a good sized garden, used to help supplement feeding 5 kids (the were Catholic). One of the chores my brother and I had as kids was to go over to the neighboring dairy farm and bring back buckets of cow patties to go into the garden. Despicable job, but since I was a tom-boy, trying to keep up with my older brother, we could look for frogs and snakes and find neat things to get into. The only thing that we had to worry about was not to dawdle too long or they would let the bull out....the bull was not friendly. Matter of fact, he had us up a tree once when we took too long. Scary!

Where did you live in Hampton and what years were you there?

Regards,
Vicki

We weren't far from each other, Vicki.

That's probably Mercury Boulevard (not drive) that you lived off of. It was Military Highway until NASA's Mercury program, after which it was renamed. Langley NASA had a big footprint on the area at the time. In fact if it wasn't for LBJ in the White House, mission control would have been in Hampton. LBJ brought the bacon home to Texas.

Imagine the line from Apollo 13 now.... Hampton, we have a problem!

I grew up in the Wythe area of Hampton. It isn't part of the "nice" area of Hampton any more. The house I grew up in is now a daycare center for the nearby Baptist church. FWIW, some very famous (and infamous) professional football and basketball athletes grew up in my neighborhood. All black, BTW...

I'm betting that my dad probably built the church you went to. That's what he did in-between NASA and the stock market careers.

I think you are right, it was Mercury Blvd. My Dad was an MP for NASA. While there, he met all of the first original astronauts and has some great signed photos of them.

Too bad we didn't know each other then. I could have used a good friend back then when my brother was beating me up......plus, you stay in touch with friends as far back as elementary school....unusual but nice.

Take care and enjoy this glorious, cold, clear Richmond day.

Vicki

PS You are a hard person to a hold of. You really should check your messages more often my friend.
