I guess I would own the rights to "stripes" being put on white, green and brown belts, since I started this practice on Okinawa in the 50s. Should I object to schools that have copied this practice? After all, before I convinced Tomoyose to adopt this practice, there was only white belt and black belts on Okinawa!
George it was you that prompted the shift to kyu ranks ?

fascinating peice of history

I always thought somewhere along the line Uechi must of decided to get in lne with the Dai Nippon Butokukai like everyone else was , but sounds like it was a less official position .

Sensei,

I may have confused what you were saying. I agree with what you stated; however, the Kokusai Budoin, which is one of those organizations mandated with the giving of titles by the Imperial Family, may have a problem with folks who give titles unauthorized by those in Japan in the arts they sanction (karate-do, judo, nihon jujitsu, kendo, iaido, batto jujitsu, kyudo, and Aikido). In other words, if an American gave someone a title here as part of the organization, the Japanese would be very upset. It is my belief, they wish to have that control/power all to themselves.

thanks,

mike

I am confused. What is the relationship between the IUKF and the IMAF (Kokusai Budoin)? Is there the potential here for an American to give "someone a title here as part of the organization"?

mike,

Absolutely no connection between the two. Uechi-ryu Karate-do is an Okinawan art, not Japanese, under the auspices of their own organization, such as Uechi-ryu Karate Association, or the All Okinawan Karate Association, etc.

The conversation was simply a history of where these titles came about and I was using the Kokusai Budoin as an example because I have some first-hand knowledge of it. George Sensei is the head of his own organization (IUKF) which issues its own rank and titles and does not have to answer to an organization such as the Kokusai Budoin.

Sorry to confuse.

Bill Glasheen wrote: In China, people who spent time learning at the temple practiced the fighting arts, meditation, medicine, and calligraphy. There was no distinct line in-between one domain and the next. The idea was to develop the whole individual. So for me, my University experience which also included martial arts training and teaching was intended to be a broad one that touched every aspect of my life.

This 19-year-old lady has been in the news a bit over the past week, World’s youngest professor. There is a quote from her that is both timely to this thread and one I think you will appreciate Bill:
On top of her unprecedented academic achievements, Sabur has a black belt in the Korean martial art of tae kwon do and is also a music prodigy. She has been playing clarinet with orchestras since her solo debut at age 11, playing with recording artists Lang Lang and Smash Mouth.

“You can reach a lot of people with music,” Sabur told Curry. “It’s never been really a hobby to me. It’s always been on equal par with my academics.”

Titles Rank !?!?

Post by robb buckland »

:D Im reading your rebutals and smiling Roy.. It was good to see you again at summerfest....
As far as rank and titles go I figure at this point in my journey its a "dont call us we'll call you "thing.....
It is an honor to share with all of you on and off the mat , and whatever policies and opinions you folks institute , I'm sure will be just for all concerned.....

In the mean time as the years pass we all know, regardless of "stripes" ,who the real mentors are..the real ambassadors of Uechi .......because love , honor and respect for our art is not housed in a document or title but in the HEART.
Robb Buckland

PS. George , do you get residuals on the stripes for kyu ranks(lol)
