That's what peeves me sometimes. Folks that may not have any at all or minimal experience with true self defense.

Notwithstanding the current UFC craze, or people who have cross trained in ground fighting, BJJ, or boxing still may not have experienced a true self defense situation.

They may have stepped outside their comfort zone by participating in this training, pumped some adrenalin into the blood stream and got the heart pumping but the legendary fight/flight principle did not kick in because you had RULES to fall back on when things got dangerous.

There are no rules in self defense. Reminding me of the guy that took a 14" Bowie knife to the hood of my police car after kidnapping 5 kids.

Really made my anal sphincter tighten. I was able to disarm him with my police nunchakus that I carried at the time rather than placing 6 at center mass and causing tons of paperwork. The only rule I followed was the use of force continuum and the rule to go home to my family after my shift.

Perfect dojo kata will get you killed on the streets. Granted, it will help you on the street but not save you. What saves you is your street education and your fighting tactics.

Enough of a rant, stepping off my soap box... :P

Why didn't you shoot him in the hand - just like in the movies?

I was going to 'wing' him in the ear or shoot the knife out of his hand. But once again, firing your weapon would have generated way too much paperwork.

Sadly it seems many of our better martial arts control techniques are unavailable to LEOs, such as the lateral vascular neck restraint. Heck... the way things are in many states, you're less likely to run afoul of the law if you get a permit and carry concealed.

Force continuum and all, you do what you gotta do, while giving The Grim Reaper (and the neurohormonal responses to him) his due.

I take solace in the fact that On Combat was co-authored by Loren Christensen. While he's a no-bullschit kinda guy, he is a martial artist. But then with him, we're talking about the real deal. There aren't many like him. (A retired police officer, Vietnam veteran, and 7th Dan black belt.)

IMO it is very closely related as are a handful of systems that came from the same place.. They share similar tools and tactics.. Only logical IMO but for some logic is hard to grasp or threatening because of a lack of understanding. "

So let me get this straight. If I want to understand how to condition my forearms, I need to learn the songs of a new wave singing duo in England?

Just playing.

And a very happy old year's eve and new year's day to everyone. :D

P.S. Kung fu, etc... they all come from North Africa, Greece and India, god knows what they were thinking when they brought it to Asia. They should have known it would eventually spread to the Americas...
