You saw the clip Mike posted of the guys doing full contact? Where more than a couple got KO'd, yes?

No pulling anything there, and yes I've seen instant KOs using similar moves in NHB events...

I've also sparred some of these types and the sheer speed, distance coverage and power is scary----nuff said... 8)

A reverse punch with a front kick finisher. Both linear techniques.
Actually the ippon was pretty clearly a right knee technique to the face (at 1:00 exactly on the clip, and 56 second on the clock). But the mechanics are the same. It was linear, it was nasty, and it was Shotokan.

It could just have easily been Muay Thai or even Uechi. In MT it's part of the repertoire; in Uechi it's right out of Seisan. We all share these basics. But then again, it's usually the basics that get the job done. All are entitled to claim a piece of this if they wish - even the "children's karate" crowd. :-P

What is clear is this. In spite of contrary evidence presented from myriad sources, it seems that kyushoguy is bent on bashing Shotokan - for reasons that by now only he knows. Well opinions are like noses - everyone has one. But in this case the gratuitous style bashing both undermines the case and violates a Forums rule.

I've been lenient on the editing because the undermining of his case has been pretty thorough and even entertaining. But I want to remind all that we discuss issues, training, and techniques; we do not bash personalities and styles. It serves no purpose other than to reflect poorly on the perpetrator - in many ways.

This discussion has plenty of room for more development. But keep Forum principles in mind.

Thanks.

Check it again Bill, it's an in close front kick to the chin. Check the video at 2:05-2:09, it gives a better angle of the shot. 8)

Here's some very short video of Machida in a point sparring match, the stand up looks similar to his MMA style.

What I like about that is his reluctance to do the annoying bouncy dance that many in the WKF do. He just waits unti his opponent gets in range, and then goes in for the grab/kill.

JUST like the way my first (Japanese) karate instructor taught. He used to recruit men off the William & Mary football team for his karate class. Oh my God... I spent much of the first year sucking wind from those reverse punches. Contact from some football boys? No problem!

And so here we see the TMA origin of an undefeated MMA champion. Go figure, Mike!

And as far as criticizing "punching air," I wonder why boxers are never criticized for shadow boxing. Or for the speed bag for that matter. Both are very practical exercises and good training techniques. Why bash kata or kihon?

Everything has critics.. There are folks who criticize some boxing training..

Every art that I know of has folks punching air at some point.. My answer for this theme is as follows:

When you strike you will either hit air or hit an object...

So we train it both ways....

This also allows one to cultivate elasticity in missed (air) strikes for purposes of reloading and full extension and snap...
