How about arms, drugs and banking. Maybe after that you could throw in legal commodities and real estate and such.

What people miss is that "power" has no party, or for that matter borders.

It's an illusion.

Was the creation of the Greek, Roman, or Ottoman Empires an illusion? Was Hitler's march across Europe an illusion?

I hear what you say about power not necessarily needing a political party or a border. But those two entities are very useful tools to achieve an end.

his unflappable moral certitude that whatever he was doing was right.
I'd say this could apply to Bush or Obama interchangeably. Or any past president, actually. And yet it's pejorative when it's used to describe W.

Two words for you, to quote the latest unflappable moral certitude. "I won."

No, I wouldn't say that, and I'm not saying it to be critical. In fact I don't know whether to love it or hate it. I'm simply acknowledging that Bush made his opposition feel helpless and ignored by projecting the vibe that he was impervious to public opinion. He takes great pride in it, actually. In this sense he was the antithesis of Clinton, a president who reportedly made use of opinion polls.
