5 Points of Sanchin

Post by Walkman »

I had heard there are "5 points" to Sanchin in addition to the "3 Battles".

What are they?

(yeah, I know it's a basic question, but I'm gokyu  )

-Thanks

I'm sure there are many variations on the theme...
1. Consolidate the basic stance
2. Make the body hard as nails
3. Learn proper breathing technique
4. Develop a penetrating eye
5. Foster the spiritual concentration

Now for my question - where did these magic 5 come from?

Never heard of them in my five + years of training (YonKyu). Glad no one has ever asked me about them!

Those five points were in an article put together by Larry Mahr and were circulated around Michigan during the 70's/80's/90's. Mahr Sensei is quite a historian and made many trips to Okinawa & studied with Master Uechi and other Senoirs as well.

I believe I have a typed copy of that somewhere at home. I'll look & scan/upload it sometime this weekend when I'm online...

TG , Like every thing its a matter of growing awareness ,for instance when I started to learn sanchin ,I decided all my time was going to be devoted to sanchin .this is one point of another five .
Now this point when adhered to increases the possibility of becoming aware of another point ,now I consider this really sums up the second point ,growing awareness .

Only through devotion and growing awareness can point three emerge .
If I am not devoted to sanchin awarness will decrease ,to sanchin ,and not increase ,this is the wrong use or lack of knowledge of point one .
Today here and now is my mind body spirit in a devoted state to sanchin . yes it is ,I say this in all honesty .

Honesty is the third point .Being aware always of my devotion with growing awareness ,in a honest manner enveloped in silence .

Silence is the fourth point

I leave you to find the fifth point .

Not that Max needs me jumping in, but here is how I read the post:

1. Sanchin Value
2. Growing Awareness
3. Honesty
4. Silence
5. Still for you to discover

The first point could be read as seeing or realizing the value of Sanchin.

I do not think Max lined them up like this because they really are not separate but rather one blend and leads you into the other.

At the same time the previous points are never left behind but continue to grow and contribute to your training.

Anyway lining them up like I did may be a disservice to the excellent point Max was making, if so, sorry Max. You know me I always have my 2 cents to throw in and Canadian money at that. :D

Haven't forgotten to look for the article ... All my files were moved during my roof problem last November, and I haven't been able to put my hands on my karate files (had to box up everything & move my office to another area).

I will look at our dojo file of papers tonite ... Jackie

DEVOTION

Point 1.

In the Kanbun method devotion to sanchin was the watchword ,the syllabus was sanchin ,there was no escape from this .
Devotion to sanchin had to be cultivated above any other idea ,this is why it was the first point ,at every step and turn of the process devotion was vital ,devotion had to be strong ,developing devotion always .
The old masters wanted demanded devotion ,this would overspill into life in general ,take the devoted mother to her children for instance ? were there is correct devotion we absorbe more ,this is why it was the first point in the kanbun method .
