I love conditioning so much really do...besides all of the stuff we do at class..I lift weights and the jars and the kettlebells and the weighted poles chiashi or however it is spelled.a very heavy gripping bag, eagle catcher..makiwara all parts of the hands fingers and thumbs..roll the shins and tap them with the rolling pin, roll and tap the arms too..use a piece of wood to tap the toes and also do toe kicks.kotetikae rubbing and pounding also the legs inside and out..push ups and sit ups and pull ups mostly knuckle push ups and finger push ups..six inches leg raises for the stomach.and anything that comes along i'll do or try in order to improve conditioning cause I love it... :D oh and how often i do all this four days a week as to allow a few days of recovery..but four days a week is my conditioning schedule..

Body Conditioning

Post by Norm Abrahamson »

I think that regular diligent practice has a greater effect on conditioning than we realize. I was at a black belt level test last weekend. When the tester struck the first candidate during the Sanchin focus test, some of the spectators gasped. Afterwords several commented that they were shocked how hard the test candidates were hit. None of the test candidates were any the worse for wear after the focus test.

Conditioning comes slowly with time and practice. There's no "AHA!" moment.

Sincerely,

Norm Abrahamson

Ah, but I have already mastered the secret Uechi-ryu anti-pickup technique....I'm happily spoken for. :D

Jeff - thank you for your compliments. And you're right - no pay raises for good looks.

Dana is very precious. Many of her friends love her (and her special friend) very much.

This is an interesting one, Dana. The more I do and the more I learn, the more I realize I must do. Then I get to trying to stick weapon and limb conditioning into as many aspects of my training as possible.

I do try to get AT LEAST one day of rest inbetween reasonably heavy conditioning sessions.

If you do it right, one really hard training sessions a week is more than enough (for whatever...). Then you factor in all the lighter stuff that you sneak in as a regular part of martial arts practice. All of it adds up.

I believe variety of approaches is good, and decreases the need for so much quantity. The body needs to be constantly fooled, and tested in myriad ways.
