Summer Camp 2005

Post by Bill Glasheen »

I have just long enough to post to say what a great time we are having here this weekend. I feel like the proverbial headless chicken being asked to execute a new fitness assessment, teaching classes (in sai) I didn't know I would be teaching, keeping track of BOTH boys who wanted to come this time, preparing to fill in for Paul as MC on the Saturday Masters ceremony, etc.

But it's fun.

I've spent some really interesting one-on-one training time with Rory, conversations about martial arts with Al Wharton, meals with Joe Pomfret, extended sessions with young, promising warriors of the future, etc.

More later. No camera from me this year because I have too much to do. But I'll link later to photos that George posts.

Makes me really ticked off that Grad School Orientation had to be this weekend. Didn't they know Summer Camp was here ?!?!?!

Gene

Having been in graduate school while also a karate instructor responsible for multiple classes, I have one piece of advice. Never let school get in the way of your education.

And when you graduate, never let the business get in the way of your work.

We missed you!

As you make it through school, remember the following: work hard, train hard, eat well, and sleep hard.

Every camp is different. If you think you captured the essence of it all because you came one time, you don't "get it." That's like saying you know about love because you got lucky once in your life.

Some camps are larger, and some are smaller. Every mix of instructors, topics, and themes is different, and they always seem to keep up with the contemporary wisdom and issues. When I think about it, it would be great to take folks such as myself who made it to all but one camp (since 1983), and document the exciting topics covered. They were exciting and important and tremendously interesting - at that point in time. A few stood the test of time, and those who were there got a leg up on everyone else in the evolution of our various arts and activities.

And the friendships remain... Everybody I know seems to hug, and I'm never afraid to hug back. With the guys, there's no homophobic slapping on the back so hard that you'll crush their back - just to let them know you're cool but not their type. It's genuine affection amongst those who participate, contribute, teach, learn, and experience.

And nobody seemed to mind that they usually got a sweaty hug from me. When I was teaching or doing, I'd be incredibly engrossed. Then there would be a hug opportunity, and I would suddenly realize just how grimey I was.

And speaking of grime... The weather actually wasn't too bad this year. I didn't quite get the sunscreen on the boys like I needed to, but there were no bad burns in spite of number 2 son having a hard time staying out of the bay. There were all those crabs and jellyfish to explore, you know... But it was HUMID. The clouds kept the UV light down and the heat bearable, but there was a little shower here and blinding fog there and... and... This was definitely bad hair weather. Writing on notepad paper got disgusting - even with the stuff I kept in my dorm room. It was a good thing I thought to use notecards for the FireDragon fitness challenge. And yes, I even Emceed the ceremony Saturday evening in a short-sleeved white dress shirt and shorts - white legs and all.

There were a few Canadians around though, so my legs didn't evoke a particularly unusual response... ;)

Good thing my computer is back in a more hospitable environment today.

This was a smaller camp, and the parties were intimate and in smaller groups. And that's just about how to describe this camp experience. Relationships were built that couldn't possibly have developed the same way through forums, e-mails, and typical workouts. If you were there, you know exactly what I mean.

And only Rory and George will know what "secretary" means... ;)

My prayers go out to all who had to fly out on the last day. Between being a mid-August, typically overbooked Sunday and there being thunderstorms here and there, the probability of bad things happening was more than minimal. I ended up unceremoniously being flown to Washington Reagan, and being left to my own devices to get a connection at Washington Dulles. On my expense. With all my luggage, and two young boys.

I made it.

Vicki, I hear, with only $24 left in her pocket, and with flight cancelled due to weather, ended up in Cleveland. But one of her sons lives there. In her own typical Vicki way, she took lemons and made lemonade. The boss will probably be ticked today but... And she also knows there are at least two Uechika who live near and around Providence who would have whisked her away for a night or two.

We Uechika are a resourceful, well networked, adventurous lot. Or some of us are... Maybe it's that camp experience.

Sue and I made it home late last night. Our flight was delayed an hour, then we spent another hour waiting for the lightning to stop. But we made it home.

My three students, who flew Delta instead of my airline of choice (Jetblue), ended up having their flight canceled until tomorrow (Tuesday). Instead of complaining, they are taking in the sights of Quincy market today. (They had to pay for their hotel, since the airlines don't help out if the delays and cancellations are weather related)

Working on the camp pictures which I hope will be posted sometime today. Yes, it was a smaller camp this year, but everyone of the regulars said it was the best one we ever had. It was one of the easiest on me.... no stress, for some reason or other.... :)

Lots of new people attended. . . and they absolutely loved the format, teachers and content. For those who couldn't attend, well. . . maybe next year.

The Florida contingency, which was well represented, formed a committee that will be running WinterFest. West Palm Beach got most of the votes for location and a February date looks good. We will be reporting on the "Fest" forum, so watch for information to be posted soon.

Bill was absolutely overworked this camp and came through with his typical Glasheen excellence.

I get lots of "advice", criticism and BS from people, but I only have a few people like Bill, Jay Salhanick, Dave Mott, Joe Pomfret, Gary Khoury, Wes Tasker, Rory & Kami Miller, Vinny Christiano, Harry Skeffington, Paul Haydu, Darin Yee, Fedele Cacia, Pat Saunders, Jon Cierri, John Hassell, Jim Maloney, Bruce & Jim Witherall, Keith Frank, Ken Schiff, Brooks Bowen, Bill Bauknecht, Gary Geddes, Windsong & Tracy Blake, Al Wharton, Roy Bedard. . . who. . . don't give me any hassle and are always there when I need them, always giving 150% with a smile on their face and a hug when I need it.

What a fantastic group of teachers this year!

Thanks to each of you....

I just wanted to take a few minutes and say that I had a great time at the camp. My only regret is not going to these camps sooner! I met a lot of wonderful people from Canada, Nebraska, all around and I had a great time.

I took the chance to have a one on one class with John Spencer which was just oh so very helpful with the development of my Uechi Ryu. Whether it was going over the basics or getting into the more advanced curriculum; it was all good and fun. From joint-locks and stick fighting to Sanchin with George (waaaaaaay to early for me!) by the ocean; it was all fun and full of information I can only hope to retain and practice.

It was amazing working with Bill Glasheen with the Sais, Uechi Kata and Suparempei. Bill is so full of knowledge and just opened many doors for me. Thank you Bill!

It was most interesting to watch a Master's Test. I took the chance to watch a few outstanding Uechi Ryu practitioners show their style in their own way and gave me something to work and strive for.

Also it was wonderful to finally meet my... let's hope I don't mess this up... My teacher's...teacher's...teacher's.. teacher.. (wow) George Mattson who ended up being a very nice and wonderful person.

Thank you all, I had a wonderful time and I hope to see everyone again.

It was great seeing and working out with both you and Sarah, Sean. Sarah told me a lot about you, and how you had managed to walk through Suparinpei with nothing more than 2 of my training videos. Wow!!!

Sean now does an incredible Suparinpei for a young dan. There are maybe a handful of Uechi people around the world who can say that. He is in an elite group.

Sean also is now in the Army, and soon will be heading to Iraq. I insisted he stay in touch with me through the ordeal. As I told him after working out with him, it is I who am not worthy. I hope all the life lessons he has picked up serve him well.

And I want your ass back in one piece, Sean. Gotta beat on you more in the future, you know...

I have never had such a difficult decision before!
Arriving late, helping out Bill and the Tournament meeting left me with little chance to do any learning.
There I was torn between David Motts class which I had been planning to do.
Raffi had his sticks out which I love doing.
And training with the Witherells which is finally what I did.
This turned out to be the right choice as I have been wanting to regain some flexibility. I have been doing the stretches 2-3 times a day since and am hopefully making progress.
I also planned on taking the fitness test but now I know what to work on!

Thanks Sensei Mattson for putting together such a great event.
Next year I hope I can do all 3 days.

Now you tell me....I;ve been putting it off for 10 years. Can't complain. Karate brought me to Japan (twice) and Europe. Now's time to get serious.
We missed you!
At least I was prepared for the flooded basement Sunday night. Imagine coming home from camp and walking into that!

Kudos for running a kick-ass Performance Test.
