International Okinawan Karate Tournament of Uechi Ryu Karate including demonstrations by Kiyohide Shinjo, 10 times Okinawan Champion, Shinyu Gushi, Shinzo Chinen, Jim Thompson, Alan Dollar, Ric Martin and the only video performance of Seiko Tomyama, 9th Dan.

Video is in European PAL format, before bidding ensure you VCR is PAL compatible.

I've been looking for the US VCR version of this 1998 video. Please e-mail me if you have an original.

It's worth $30.00 to me.

So John what you're looking for is the NTSC , VHS version instead of the PAL, VHS version. Might help your search.

I'd highly suggest that you get it on DVD though. VHS is a terrible format and DVD is sooooo much better.

Buy it quick.
The website disapeared once before for a long time.
I bought a pal version and paid $10.00 to have it converted over. I then put it on DVD so it will last.
It's an okay tape but for me Toyama and Shinjo performing Kata are the highlight. Couple good fighting matches too.

Guys and Gal ...

You are wonderful and resourceful. No dice on Amazon so I e-mailed Sensei Dollar.

I hope he has one left.

I don't understand the shoulder rolls and growls in Toyama's San Sei Ryu but Gushi Sensei does the same in his Training Video when he lifts the Nagiri Gami.

I believe Andre Tippet ventured out West to participate in one of Dollar's tournaments.

A guy from my dojo went to that tournament too. He talked about it for a long time afterwards also... it was a great event from what I gathered.

Toyoma's done that since way back in the day. You can see him on some of the old tournament videos doing that. GEM sells it one the visit to China video. Toyama has dark hair then.

The shoken, the toe kick, and the big traps were the hallmarks of Uechi back in the day. You get the traps from jar work but can pop them up for demonstration purposes. I've frightened more than a few folks by popping my own traps up when talking about training. You can almost hear "Superfreak" playing in their heads when they look at me. It's even more dramatic on guys.

And it was a great way to protect the collar bone from overhead strike. So there was method to the maddness.

Gushi also has a deep knee bend before he picks up the jars - also not standard, but good for remembering the body mechanics.

The trap roll is a classic pose in bodybuilding.

It's a very primal posture, designed to project size, strength, agression, and dominance.

Dana is right that the oversized traps is an artifact of Okinawan jar (kami) training. Interestingly enough, by today's modern weight training and bodybuilding standards, the physiques of old school Uechi Ryu would be considered lacking in symmetry. Modern training equipment allows for better balance of strength development, leading to better performance and lower injury rates.

When you have someone with one body part larger than it should be with respect to the rest of the body, it can look fascinating. Whatever... If you've got it, flaunt it. Who would J Lo be without her bootie? It's her calling card. Power to her!
