Interesting psych article on emotional states

Post by TSDguy »

"Studies have found that, for some reason, an enormous mental gulf separates "cold" emotional states from "hot" emotional states. When we are not hungry or thirsty or sexually aroused, we find it difficult to understand what effects those factors can have on our behavior. Similarly, when we are excited or angry, it is difficult to think about the consequences of our behavior -- outcomes that are glaringly obvious when we are in a cold emotional state."

Getting a grasp on something like this helps us understand martial arts as well as most of the off-topic discussions on these boards.

Think about the soccer mom who pledges that she would never use something as heinous as a gun even if her family's lives were at risk.

How many of those soccer moms are really out there, that would let their kids get killed before taking out a perp? I wonder if that's all political noise.

Although, I did have a roommate who thought my karate was ill advised. I asked him what he would do if attacked and he said just lay there. When I asked him if he thought that was a really wise strategy for a fight, he said, "it takes two to fight."

With one, I guess it's just a beating

I'm fine with using soccer moms as stereotypes and metaphors. :)
