Here's one.

Tibia and fibula fracture

Ouch!

The tibia is the bigger bone.

It's a bad fracture. However... It's better to break the bone than it is to rip the joints apart above and below the bone. Sometimes a broken bone is a blessing. Your body gives out where it can heal rather than where you will be cursed with pain and disability for the rest of your life.

If they can get the pieces together and avoid infection, you are fine. Bones should heal stronger than they were before the break as long as all the parts are there and the individual is in good health.

Really bad fractures may mean some pins, screws, and rods. It just depends upon how badly mangled the bones were.

I'm thinking fibia...at the ankle.

I'm hoping air cast.

I find out tomorrow.

I guess my flinch response was lacking but at least I never cried. It's been 13 days and it's not healing, I finally broke down and went to the doctor yesterday and will be going for xrays tomorrow.

Ball season is pretty much done for me.

Mary!!!

I'll be in Boston on Thursday and Friday. If by any chance you can swing on by, give me an e-mail. You need time off, you know. Tell the folks at work that you have an owie and need to stay home to eat your chicken soup.

I know that's probably an empty offer. But if you can... Meanwhile, my healing thoughts are with you.

Oh, no, Mary! That is awful. I am so sorry to hear about that.

Want me to send you a book, or anything to do while at home?

Just let me know, and I will.

We need to Skype soon.

Love ya,
Vic

If you broke your ankle, doubt they'll want you in an aircast.... bummer... meanwhile, there are a couple of very interesting tibfib snaps caught on film, including a wrestler and a thai boxer who went shin on shin. I'll try to find them, sounds like they were worse than yours and could at least give a "it could always be worse" perspective.

Meanwhile, since calcium and vitamin D are always in the recommendations for women.... worth mentioning a review in Archives of internal medicine that meta-analyzed vitamin D trials and suggested a mortality benefit, which is the first good news for supplement trials in a while. Feed those bones!

Happy / speedy mending.

Thanks guys.

Vicki I'm not at home - haven't missed a day of work yet. Thanks for your kind offer.

Ian, I don't think it's my "ankle" per se - the hit was approx. 1.5'-2" above the ankle bone area on the inside shin. Apparently the guys in the outfield heard the crack when it happened. I just remember trying not to be sick to my stomach.

Anyway I am walking on it (limping really) and the only reason I'm getting it checked is because it's not healing as fast as it should. I'm probably making more of it than it really is.

Mary

You are an idiot! You hurt yourself. IF you broke it, you shouldn't be walking on it!!

Allow yourself a little sympathy, and by all means take care of yourself. And please keep us posted.

BIG hugs.

You are not an idiot....shame on you, Bill, for calling Mary that (even in play).

Do get it checked, Mary, and let us know what they say.

Good luck!

Vicki

Red Sox fans are allowed to call other Red Sox fans "idiots." It's a 2004 thing...

It is! And it would be a compliment to call me such - in this context.

To start with... My primary goal is to prod Mary to get help. She's a lot like my mom in that she is very stoic. But stoicism can cause further injury. If I have to look like a jerk in the process of seeing that Mary doesn't hurt herself, so be it. It isn't about me.

The "idiot" thing is kind of a colloquialism. It reminded me of being a kid in the 1960s in my black neighborhood where I learned that to be "bad" was good, and to "have an attitude" was to have an unpleasant attitude.

But like a lot of things, they have to be used in context. For instance if anyone at UVa called me a "toolie" (a derogatory term for an engineer), well that wasn't taken very well - UNLESS another engineer affectionately called me a "toolie."

The 2004 Red Sox called each other "idiots" as part of their mindset of not believing "the curse" and having the audacity to think they could take The Evil Empire (a.k.a. Yankees) down. After a while, "idiots" became an affectionate term. It subsequently was used as the title for Johnny Damon's autobiography - written before he sold out to The Dark Side.

7 xrays taken yesterday afternoon and I'm supposed to have the results in 3-4 days.

Idiot....hmmmmmm...I kinda get it.

Just to clarify the reason for my delay in checking it out was because I've had more painful injuries from karate. I figured, "Hey, the karate injuries have always healed, this will heal too and doesn't hurt that bad" But after almost two weeks the healing was simply not happening.

I guess the thing is, when you get hurt, no matter what you are doing, you should get it checked out.
