Martial artists on the campaign trail

Post by Bill Glasheen »

OK now, bear with me. I saw this text for a Mike Huckabee campaign ad, and it made me laugh.

I don't care to comment on whether or not Mike Huckabee should be president. I just thought the whole notion of a martial artist using his fame to advance a political agenda to be... interesting. And then there's the Hollywood hyperbole. Oye! 8O

Go get 'em, Chucko! :usa

"My plan to secure the border. Two words: Chuck. Norris," says Huckabee, who stares into the camera before it cuts away to show Norris standing beside him.

"Mike Huckabee is a lifelong hunter who'll protect our Second Amendment rights on gun ownership," says the tough-guy actor, who takes turns addressing viewers.

"There's no chin behind Chuck Norris' beard, only another fist," Huckabee says.

"Mike Huckabee wants to put the IRS out of business," Norris adds.

"When Chuck Norris does a push-up, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the earth down," Huckabee says.

"Mike's a principled, authentic conservative," says Norris.

In closing, Huckabee says: "Chuck Norris doesn't endorse. He tells America how it's going to be. I'm Mike Huckabee and I approved this message. So did Chuck."

That's a (very) old internet joke. Chuck Norris this and that. It's not real. The image is the cover of one of his old movies I think (one about defending America from Russians or something wasn't it?), and someone slapped the photo over top of it.

That is a very real news story from the wire services. If "it" is a joke, it's a pretty good one.

I inserted the picture from another site.

I saw the 'ad'. The script is an old internet joke from about 4 years ago... "Chuck facts". I have no idea if it's officially endorsed, but either way it's a joke. Either about or by Huckabee.

Erm, that sounds stupid. Obviously it was "endorsed" by Huckabee, I meant I don't think it has anything to do with his campaign other than maybe trying to be "hip with the kids".

I love chuck, but disagree with some of his politics.

There are way better republicans that can run.

This is awesome though.

Well I'll be damned, I didn't expect this to run on TV. Just browsing around the internet, it seems he completely failed in capturing the young folks' attention, since this joke is from several years ago and is pretty played out. And I doubt anyone over about 35 even knows what the heck is going on. Bizarre.

IMHO, if you're smart, then you don't.

Who would you like to see running, Adam?

John McCain or Ron Paul.

Don't agree with everything they say, but atleast they don't come off as fanatics, and they don't seem too dishonest(by the standards of political campaigning i mean.

The Chuck Norris facts have spread all around the world.
Even he finds some of the statements humorous,
and he tries not to take any of them seriously.
Chuck Norris, like any other celebrity become the target of jokes but this kind of attention makes him very popular .What I really think about it that this is a very smart decision to run him in the campaign.
A world famous person! Who else could bring so much attention to your campaign then Chuck Norris?
Watch the video he is funny, cute and sympathetic.

It's great to see you online. My best to you and your dojo mates.

Wow what a gig Chuck has going, eh? We should be so lucky to have that kind of marketing. And all of us could use a little more of that self-deprecating humor.

Life doesn't have to be so serious. A smile can be a very powerful weapon.

You could do worse.

John McCain is a straight shooter. Like him or not, you know how he stands on issues. He doesn't pander, and he doesn't bend in the winds of public opinion (such as on what to do about Iraq). Both in Vietnam as a POW and in the Republican party, he has demonstrated incredible loyalty - to a fault.

McCain's biggest problem is a deficit of charisma.

IMO, a winning Republican nominee could do a lot worse than choose McCain as a running mate. That's probably the best use of his special talents.

As for Ron Paul, well... He has a libertarian bent, which puts him in my personal list of favorites. He doesn't have widespread support, but he has a very strong Internet following. And then there is this "X factor."
GQ magazine today announced its honorees for the 12th annual Men of the Year issue, and Ron Paul is among those honored!

Ron Paul, named "Dark Horse of the Year" of the small and select group of entertainers, athletes, politicians, and other icons, is the only 2008 presidential candidate to receive the honor.
The thing I notice about Ron Paul is that - among those who support him - he's one of the few candidates out there whom people are genuinely excited about. You might call him the Obama of the Republican field of candidates. That is a quality not often seen in contemporary politics.

The internet rulers are not happy that their (terrible terrible terrible) Chuck Norris jokes were appropriated:

Wow! Good thing we have all these Cyber Warriors to look up to for inspiration and wisdom.

It is what it is. Anyone who thinks something written and submitted over cyberspace is their's to control has completely lost touch with reality.

Huckabee may get enough of a boost out of it to do well in Iowa. But I doubt that it will last. He's got some baggage that eventually will bite him in the rear. (Videos of him saying he will agree to a whole host of taxes.)
