Hello, Mary!

Yes we share a passion for this Great American... Greater American pastime. 8)

Go figure that the first use of instant replay in baseball is to confirm a home run call in September. For A-Rod - Mr. April himself.

I have a confession to make, Mary. A group of us Red Sox fans and occasional SI.com bloggers (Can you figure out my handle?) have joined forces with a few of the Evil Empire... er... Yankee bloggers in rooting against Tampa Bay. Yep... Go figure. ;)

Nothing personal... except for a little passion against James "hitman" Shields...

(Nice bob and weave!)

...and Johnny "the thug" Gomes.

Red Sox fans still remember Gomes pounding on a defenseless Coco Crisp who was pinned to the ground under a pile.

And Yankee fans still remember some skirmishes in spring training that resulted in the loss of a catcher.

So yea, I was actually happy to see the Yanks beat the Rays at Tropicana. Again... 8)

And besides... I kinda feel sorry for them this year. What good is an arch rival when they can't even be competition? ;)

No game Vic...just copious amounts of house cleaning - the partying starts today and includes a "Uechi Reunion" Party this weekend (during Hurrican Hanna's visit of course!!)

Interesting pictures here especially the first one - how can you hit a target if you're not looking at it?

Doesn't it sort of look like he's throwing a pitch?

Excellent observation. Would you please help me in class, Mary? ;)

(This is especially a problem when teaching people how to throw a spinning hook kick.)

Another excellent observation. The activities are different. But the mechanics are (nearly) identical. I use this to help get people out of their "Sanchin robot" stage of karate training. Swinging a bat helps as well. This is why I still go to the batting cages and hit from both sides. It's great cross training.

There is what I like to call a "cobra strike" hidden in Seisan kata. I have my students do it as a finishing technique in the Seisan bunkai. Interestingly enough the students who have the most problem with this technique are the ones who have never thrown a baseball or softball. Meanwhile... the technique is "me"! My body knew how to do it before I discovered it, and nobody had to teach me how. Those years as a pitcher and outfielder helped teach me mechanics that I have brought elsewhere in life.

I also note how playing a musical instrument helps with timing, riding horses helps with stances and posture, etc.
