An angel returns to heaven: Goodbye Farrah----1947-2009

LOS ANGELES – Farrah Fawcett, the "Charlie's Angels" star whose feathered blond hair and dazzling smile made her one of the biggest sex symbols of the 1970s, died Thursday after battling cancer. She was 62.
Very sad...

A poster most of us who grew up in the 70s had on the wall at one time..

Farrah is gone all too soon taking a part of all of us with her...

RIP Farrah... :(

A tribute....

Groucho Marx died three days after Elvis Presley...and no one really remembers that. Farrah's death will probably be overshadowed by the other passing of the day.

Holy crap what's going on...? 8O

We also lost two guys at work in the last three months both were under 42.. I have to wonder if this generation will be the first to live shorter lives than the last and what environmental factors may be contributing...

Not environmental, Jim, but behavioral. Metabolic syndrome is a growing problem in this country. It is the end result of affluence combined with a population that eats for taste and convenience over health.

The constellation of conditions that encompass metabolic syndrome include obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol, and type II diabetes (insulin resistant diabetes). Cancer often follows because of the types of foods people eat (lots of animal fats) or don't eat (fresh fruits and vegetables).

This is an easy syndrome to fight if people take the time to prepare their own food, make wise food choices, and control portion size. However most would rather run up the health care bill of our country by treating the symptoms with modern pharmacology and - when necessary - surgery.

Oh, and exercise helps as well. 8)

Women have good and bad news ahead. The Gardasil vaccine will dramatically decrease the risk of cervical cancer. However early menarche due to a high caloric diet will increase the risk of breast cancer. The more years a woman is in menarche, the higher her risk for this disease.

I agree to a point but...

Didn't the last generation like good tasting food?

Didn't the moms of the last generation spend lots of time cooking up all kinds of tasty stuff using all kinds of no no ingredients?

Didn't the last generation have way less information on what was and wasn't good for you?

Didn't the last generation smoke more?

I mean you have the health crazes of the 70s the 80s, etc..

I think you can't ignore all these food additives that didn't exist then that are everywhere now.. HFCS for one which was only recently deemed negative by the FDA and is everywhere.. A long list of all kinds of additives used now I'll wager that didn't exist then... Of course all these things must be considered..

New chemicals coming into contact with people and food.

It would be interesting to look over each 10 year period going back and seeing how many and whom die of what and when, etc..

Jim

Life expectancy has increased because of better care for heart attacks, less smoking, and more modern pharmaceuticals (antihypertensives, statins, etc.).

However...

The combination of the fast food industry (eating for taste and convenience) and the increase of high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING has set us back a bit. Plus portion sizes have gone up.

My mom prepared meals with fresh ingredients. We ate out only on rare occasion. That isn't the norm any more. Now both parents usually work, and there's a lot of fast food and processed food in the diet.

My Dad and grandparents ate horrible diets. My dad considered all vegetables "rabbit food". Same with my grandfather, Scotland is known for having a heart attack diet. He lived to his eighties.
But yes lots of people make the wrong choices. Lets not forget alcohol abuse which is on the rise in this economy also. Smoking and drug use both prescription and non. I consider being on any prescription as a nessage your doing something wrong. Diabetes drugs and some other of course not included in that.

The report I read this morning was unclear about the cause of death of Billy Mays. Besides cardiac arrest, there are a variety of things that can kill an otherwise healthy person suddenly, including an burst aneurysm in the brain, which may or may not have been exacerbated by hypertension. I think I'll let the medical examiner do their job on Billy without assuming anything.

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle illness that can lead to insulin dependence.

He's a manic, fast-talking TV pitchman. He's best known for advertising OxiClean, Kaboom, and Orange Glow.

Now and then a craftsman becomes so iconic that he transcends his work. Jay Leno had him on The Tonight Show more than once to spoof a product endorsement.

my grandparents ate lots of fats,etc..as it was what they could grow (pigs) and buy cheap..but they were more active, on average, then many today..they lived in a small town and walked to get groceries, visit, etc. a mile or two walk wasn't exercise it was getting the mail and a few visits. my husband tells the story of going to visit hie 70-odd grandpa, only to find him up in an apple tree picking apples...while 30-60 min 3-4x week is recommended for good health..whatyou do the rest of the time surely has an impact...

Good write up Bill...

He was also in the middle of a reality show and I think the family had a new baby not that long ago..

Such a sad 911 call...

They are saying it looks like heart disease.. The heart appeared enlarged and he had hypertension and cholesterol buildup in the region of one of the ventricles as I understand it.. Appears he died in his sleep..

I hate it when folks die like this... :(

RIP

On an afterthought: I guess we won't be seeing more runs of the health care spot he made where he says he uses the service...

You got to wonder how someone becomes a TV pitchman for junk that doesn't work.

Do they get discovered on a used car lot or what?

But still a stretch for a celebrity death. If you need three, Carradine, Fawcett and Michael. Let the jokes of them meeting in heaven begin....

I think Bill said it well...

Also I don't think the stuff he sold didn't work I know much of it did.. He turned Oxyclean into a 2 billion dollar a year brand over night..

Fox was talking about how many brands he put on the map and man that's a lot of jobs folks.. The guy was likable and as of late became even more visible and likable IMO--and had a relatively young family who needed him....

I still can't understand how medicine failed to help him.. They should have caught his condition before it was too late... He was supposed to get a hip replacement done today well it should have been last week for some life saving work on his heart.....
