Well I suckered into a pre-built machine.
Bought a Gateway, despite my dealings with them in the past(insert horror stories here).
Well it didn't fail,(g)Fateway continues to put the "K" in kawility Image. DOA out of the box, I got 5 boots out it, then a S.M.A.R.T. drive failure. The reason it took 5 boots to die is...had to go into safemode 4 times to get it to see the (1)MouseUSB(2)Uninstall the NIC that didn't exist(3)Uninstall the modem that didn't exist (4)Uninstall the entire network.
Extreme? yes. Anoyning VERY, will i be reimbursed for doing the warrenty work NO.
Chalk this down as "Well at least the monitor works"

I warned youse guys about the pitfalls of the new Gateways about a month back on this forum, albeit it was just my opinion.

Send it back, if you can, and get your money back. Just go peaceful.

Tony,
I bet someones "kan-ban" was high and they pushed it out the door Image
hee hee an 11th hour 301 to beat the other teams.
Allen,
I was on the way out the door to the local Country Store but that "techie" sense of pride kicked in.. .. 60 minutes later i had it up and running. 2 NOT 1 but 2 bad IDE cables and a bad drive image. Now it's happy setting here running Win2k Pro.

From now i stick to building them..

Don't you hate that when it happens? Glad the problem was easy for you to resolve. Which model did you buy, Chuck?

BTW, I have a couple of extra hard drives for sale if anyone is interested in upgrading.

I have the Essential 866 w\ram and monitor upgrades. It's a first ever USB only machine I've owned so I'm not to sure about it Image
It's not a bad machine for the $ really. It's my first inhell I mean Intell CPU and it's OK Image
What size drives I'm always looking for storage space.

Both of my 40 gig Maxtors are going to be up for grabs shortly, a WD 6.4 g Caviar, for IDEs. Also in the SCSI arena, I have a 4g IBM, plus a 1 g JAZ drive with 1g cartridges that I never use.

I'm maneuvering for 10,000 and 15,000 rpm U3 Cheetas only systems here.

If you are interested in any or all, shoot me some email to uechi@ici.net. My email address is going to change shortly.

BTW, I remember one of youse guys is into Metal. Try this radio station then click on their "Live Play" button so you can whistle to the tunes while you work. WAAF is one of the most outrageous and popular radio stations in the Worcester/Boston area. I'm looking for some good blues stations.

Chuck,

did you get one of those new high speed burners with that thing? I'm thinking about giving this machine to Chelsea and buying a new machine from Gateway. Of course, I am going to DEMAND they install the right image and make sure it works! Image Anyway, I want one of those new burners. Supposedly, they burn at like 16X and read 32X. They are also supposed to be coaster proof.

Allen, that radio station is pretty cool. Thanks for the link!

I opted not to pay Gateways CD-RW price and got a burner seperatly.
A Plextor 12x10x32x w/Burn Proof tech.
I've burnt 700meg CD's in under 7 minutes.
haven't made a coaster yet! I can d/l from Newsguy and RR and burn CD's on the same machine no problem. Plextor continues to be one if not the top rated CD-R on the market.
The 16x's are around but still cost $$$.
Tony,Do you know anyone local that can get VHS onto a computer? in either .mpg or .ram format?
