Hello??????
Hey Becky,
I know there are several women who read and choose not to post. I'm not sure how to change that trend.
It's probably also due to the high attrition rate for women in MA. Particularly uechi. I've talked with folks who study other styles and they are often amazed that I study Uechi. Which they think of as very hard hitting style that is only done by ex-gi's and men who used to play contact sports. I'm not so sure that there are that many women out there....
sigh....

Hello??????
Hi Dana...maybe between the two of us we can spark some interest in them.
what techniques to you find work best for you being a woman?
I find that alot of times I have a tendancy to kick at the legs to bring them down to my size.

Hello??????
Hi Becky--
My best techniques tend to be the ones we aren't allowed to use in sparring class.
Kicking the legs is always good. In sparring I sometimes hit guys with palm heel strikes instead of closed fists becuase I can transfer more of the energy of the strike into them without worrying about if my wrist is going to give out or not.
I also like to do things that folks consider to be judo-esque. By that I mean moving in little circles instead of trying to block the guys force on force.
One of my new favorites is using the 3 bushiken strike combination out of seisan. But instead of using it on the inside I use it from the outside.
Using one hand to pull the punch straight down while the other drives foreward into their (neck -- in life) chest or ribs.
and you -- what do you like to hit besides the legs?

Hello??????
I guess my favorite is the head...I like to go for the points on the jaw line that will cause them to go out quick.
I always use the leg points to bring them down to my size so I can attack the head.

Hello??????
Hi Dana, how are you.

Besides the fact that you can conrol it, the palm heel is a very conditioned part of the body due to the repetious elbow and hammer strikes while performing kata and perfecting the moves.
Be sure to practice the hammer and elbow strikes with both arms so that both palms will be equally conditioned.
BTW, I used the right palm stike on a green belt student that I was sparring with last night. I gave him quite a shot to the cheek that surely would have hurt him if I had used a closed fist. The stunning shot allowed me to get in to grab hold of him and try to take him down. However, the teacher in me took over and I stopped to make sure he was OK. You could hear the slap throughout the dojo.
This type of hit is allowed in the NHB fights, and not allowed in point fighting.
How do you figure that one out.

Using the palm heel is an excellant way to go to the head/face while sparring in the dojo without worrying about hurting your hand or your fellow students head/face. I use this all the time while sparring (as anyone who saw my fight in the New England Open can attest to) because I can control it very well.In sparring I sometimes hit guys with palm heel strikes instead of closed fists becuase I can transfer more of the energy of the strike into them without worrying about if my wrist is going to give out or not.
