Hitting well vs hitting hard

Post by Dana Sheets »

Accuracy over power?
Power over accuacy?

Big person = power over accuracy
small person = accuracy over power plus more speed.

When you train - are to taking into consideration that just whacking away on somebody as hard as you can might be a really BAD idea if they're way bigger than you are?

Others write at length that you won't be able to hit small targets in bad situations.

Others say - train small, miss small.

If I train to hit something smaller than the size of a dime won't I have a better chance of staying inside an area of a half dollar?

Hitting well vs hitting hard

Why emphasize one over the other? Hit your target as hard as you can.

I think you are correct in your basic characterization of small fighter vs large fighter. A smaller (weaker?) person will hope to be faster, though that may not be true. The smaller fighter will need to be mindful of the targets they choose, seeking maximum "bang for the buck." It is also true that the smaller fighter's technique must be correct, because they will probably not have the advantage of strength allowing them to "muscle" their way through bad technique.

Bottom line: I say train to deliver as much power as you can as precisely as you can.
