Why it's nice to be taller

Post by Dana Sheets »

I can't tell you how happy I was when a woman shorter than I was joined the dojo. I finally understood why fighting was so much easier for everyone else against me.

Well - not everyone. But we've got a bunch of people in the dojo that are at least 6 inches taller than I am. It makes a difference.

So then I was reading Jim's post on Van's forum about how wing tsun usually looks at the center mass instead of the eyes.

Heck - some of the people I have to fight I have to literally look up. And I've also heard that your peripheral vision reacts faster than your focused vision.

So I guess the best combination in a fighter is tall with a vacant stare. Image

But fighting taller people is really an issue. And short of running in an tackling them Mixed Marital Arts style, I haven't found that much that's overly successful against really tall folks.

Ideas? Experiences?

Dana,

You're taller than me and probably even stronger than me.

The fight is in the heart and mind. I have never only encountered one person my size in competition and the rest were all bigger to varying degrees.

In real fights, they were all bigger (and perhaps why they want to get it on with me). If you think it's going down... hit 'em first, hit 'em hard, hit 'em with whatever you got and don't stop till he's down (and, hopefully, out).

Simple, n'est pas?

Ah yes - I should have been more clear.

David - thanks for the compliment but there's NO WAY I stronger than you are. sorry, had to say it. You train your butt off and are fit as a fiddle -- I'm closer to the "standard" women's BMI at 18-20%.

Anyway - I mean to talk about sparring not real fighting and I forgot to make that clear.

So, sparring taller people. You know the continuous kind of back and forth sometimes done in a dojo and sometimes done for points.

That's what I mean to ask about.

Sparring... OK. Image

The toughest competitor I ever faced was the person who was the same size as me but stronger and faster.

Where to look... The old saying, "look 'im in the eyes", never worked for me in sparring or fighting. The eyes can deceive. (And, in a real fight, it can give humanity. You don't want that.)

Generally speaking, the smaller person has to get inside on a taller person to nullify reach. A shorter person inside is in his/her prime reach area while the taller person is tripping over him/herself. You have to instill and fortify your mindset to get inside. You do it over and over again and take your hits along the way. Soon, you get in more and more and get hit less and less on the way in.

To get in, you need to develop explosive speed and movement. Kata alone won't do it. Think/use ploymetrics.

Work on timing off the other's attack. If you can move into the attack of a taller person, you nullify his reach and increase your power at the same time because he is running into your counter. Think/practice reaction drills. Again, you need to pay the price in practice.

Another timing tactic, think practice/getting even smaller in response to a taller person's attack. Believe it or not, taller/larger person has a harder time finding the smaller vulnerable targets of a small person. If you compress, it makes those targets smaller and harder to hit. This means, of course, you have the fortitude and/or conditioning to take it off the arms, shoulders, legs or whatever. Explode off the initial contact and, once again, you're inside where you want to be.

There are other minor tactics too but these depend on the character of your opponent. For example, I don't like chasing tall opponents because a lot of times they can outrun you even when backpedaling. But some taller folks are simply not coordinated or as fast. Noticing this, exploding and chasing is a good tactic. High kickers... with good timing, you can duck and come underneath. I have dropped by share of good kickers on their backs/heads with this one. (With friendlier opponents, I have tapped in the groin just let know they could have gotten worse.) With stronger but slower opponents, use fakes/feints to get them to commit then counter after that and get the heck back out.

There is no getting around it. You can do various drills to prepare but then you simply have to spar -- a lot -- to know your own capabilities, to be able to read the other, and to strategize accordingly. The adequate fighter is the one that fights the same way well no matter his/her opponent. The good fighter actually assesses and adapts quickly.

talking sparring , id suggest closing the distance fight close , fight from inside , crowd , angle and harass .

im reasonably tall and these are the ways i find smaller people frustrate my tactics .

sparring wise i`d agree height/reach is an advantage , but i once gave a 7 fter a run for his money with these tactics .

still lost though

I was just teasing because i used to kick way to high , always pushign for more range height , can remeber kicking way over some peoples heads Image , actually took quite an effort to get back on target , love the picture , and the exposure can see the speed in the kick Image

yup groin , short people are mean , forgot that advantage Image

hah hah! David! Steve has adapted well to us "shorties" so whenever we close in on him, he snaps his kick back and pops you with a jab... He nails you with it all the time because he knows your coming in, hah hah.... What i try to do is duck under and hook into his kidneys... easier said then done though...

Tony,

I don't want you to hurt Steve. But next time on the beach, get underneath his kick and quickly (but gentlely) stand up. His kicking knee will be caught on your shoulders and he will be off-balanced. Hard to have an effective jab when you trying to stay up. Image
