kumite 2

I was practicing kumite 2 but got hung up
so I went to my Uechi-ryu 2000 book for alittle help, but I couldn't find kumite 2,
is it called something else in that book?

Your right it's not there.
There are some Uechi items practiced in some dojo and not others.
One is kumite 2, another horsestance kumite, the yankee kata "nishirokko" (spelling guess) and kumite 3 with counter attacks added.
Not to mention 2 Kanshiwa bunkai's, Kanshu bunkai, and different applications in Seisan bunkai.
I've even seen slight variation between schools that practice these kumite and bunkai.
I guess Moulton Sensei has more writing to do for his next book, theres a lot of stuff out there.

Sidenote -- Jose (AKA Cukie) Aja my sempai with Bob Campbell at the old Mattson's Academy recently showed me a series of booklets on kumite 1,2&3. The series feature Kanai Uechi sensei doing the kumites. Man, what a collector's items.

I am gonna ask that he wills them to me when he passes on. He is older than me...

Kumite-2 has not yet made it into any of my books yet, wedgeman.

What is in there for kumites is Kumite 3, Kumite 1, Kyu Kumite, Dan Kumite, Yakusoku Kumite, and Sinjo's Kumite.

I don't know K-2 either and have never been to a Uechi dojo that does it, but there is one kumite, strange to me, I photographed and coreographed for The American Uechi-ryu Handbook but never included it.

Is Kumite-2 something worthwile putting into 2000 when I have it reprinted to justify a revision? Tony? Fred? Anyone?

Tony,
Kumite 2 starts from a right stance and goes through two high, two middle and two low blocks. Then there are two middle fishtail blocks followed by a back fist or wrist strike counter. It then follows the series in kumite one only with the opposite hand.
Hammer fist block open the opponent, then backfist. This is followed with a double shuto block with the ridge hand as in kumite one. Ask Lenny for a link to his site, he has it all laid out in pics.

The series of books I think your talking about were written by Mattson Sensei and are the rarest books around.

Nice concise description Fred. I remember everybody first learning 3, then 1, then 2, and so therefore often wondered why they were numbered as such.

I used to do that kumite when I was studying in Germany. It was a good reaction drill. The whole thing is quick and we used to see how fast we could do it.

The drill is on pages 199-204 in George's book. I don't think we called it kumite #2 but what is in the book is what we did. There are no kicks in this drill either. I "think" we called it low-middle-high but I am not sure.

If George gives me permission, I can scan the pics and put it up or better yet, if someone is doing it, like Tony said, tape it and send me the tape or a video clip and I'll put it up.

I don't recall seeing it on any of the vidmag tapes. In fact I forgot ll about it.

No big deal guys... Just a number of basic two person drills for new students. In 1958, Uechi-ryu only had Kumite one, which was the only prearranged drill taught on Okinawa pre 1958. I called it #1 for obvious reasons.

Since it was a bit advanced for newer students, I created 2,3,4 and a weird kata called "nishiroku". (don't ask!)

2,3 & 4 were simply variations of a number of back and forth movements, using high, middle and low punches. The variations were many and allowed a teacher to be somewhat creative in teaching them. After awhile, they got pretty advanced (much like our Kanshiwa bunkai, thanks to all the creative students around) and contained kicks as well as punches.

When kyu and dan kumite were added to the system, I stopped using these drills.

That's the missing kata of Uechi-ryu. We can't let it die. We must have it.
