Glass Door

Post by CANDANeh »

Unfortunately if someone wants in they can find a way to do so solid door or not. Alarm systems help (I have rigged a cheap but very noisey air horn on my shed door) and a dog that will bark (most do) are good deterants. Also keep the area outside the sliding door well lite.

Hi colleen.

Why not have a roller shutter installed for your security , seen quite a few here in the UK.
A good one should protect that sliding door ,plus give you peace of mind while away from home , I have five bull terriers on the run in my half acre of ground ,its very difficult to get close to my door .

Glass Door

Post by Colleen »

This is more of a safety topic rather than a martial arts topic. Over the years, I've heard that it's very easy to break into a home through a sliding glass door. To combat this, I've always place a sizeable, solid wood pole or block in the track. My logic was that if someone were able to pop the lock, they wouldn't be able to slide open the door.

Then, at my last residence, my slider started to come off track. I had the maintence man come around to fix it, only to be astounded at how easy he took the door down with just a screw driver. Anyway, it had me wondering for awhile if I was attacking the problem (safety) in the correct way. Any suggestions for increasing safety on a sliding glass door? Switching it to a solid, non-glass door isn't an option when you're renting.

What about some kind of lock like they use at the gun Dept of Wally World..sort of a cabinet lock...Hey one good thing is if they take the entire door off you will know they are coming in better than if the door quietly slides...I always used the stick because I felt I could hear to escape if the whole door comes off.
Hey Here is another idea...Drill two small holes near the handle that one will touch if opening the door. Connect to a stun gun[compact way] wired remotely...be careful for voltage drop...needs testing OR get a car coil, hook it to a battery and wire it to the door and one insulated contact on the handle. You could place a metal sheet[aluminum from roofing supply] on the deck as ground then make the door positive. He may screw you up if he has sneakers on but I would think he would go to his knee if he tries the screwdriver trick..Put an ON button somewhere in the circuit that is handy.....or just leave it hot... but warn your friends... and keep away from the door if you like wine... You can get creative with the electric contacts..as well as power supply. 120 wired in twice is 220..a good healthy flow...An alarm with a Loud Bell? A "Protected by Smith and Wesson Decal?" Just trying to be helpful...One good blast of Ozone from an electrical discharge smells a whole lot better than a yard with five angry turd dispensers in it, but you could love and dote upon their accepting greediness.{A Korean girlfriend of mine saw a small one as we were walking down the street and she said,"Oh look...a light snack" not easily intimidated she...but the only dogs she likes for more than a minute are in a stew.
The point of the dogs is they give warning and are cool if one happens to like them, as friends I mean but you are tied down feeding and caring for them....of course there could be some burnt hair smell for a munute with the electriciy and that won't smell too good either.

There is actually a solution, and your locksmith can help you.

When I bought my most recent home, it had all the exciting amenities of suburban living. The typical sheltered yuppie walks in and thinks convenience and status. It didn't take me but a few days of contemplation before I realized the place was ripe for a break in. Glass lookout windows beside the front door? Oh yea, Mrs. Jones can peek through them and see if there is a bad guy out there. But that also means the bad guy can ram something through the glass and open the lock. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!! Frankly I think they put this stuff in homes these days to keep the alarm companies and locksmiths in business.

Other than putting an alarm in, you can have special inserts put in the frames of windows and sliding glass doors that are very difficult for the BG to see. Some even require a special tool to pull them out. The locksmith drills a hole through the frame that connects top window to bottom, or sliding door to stationary door. Then a rod is put in the hole that can be made very difficult to remove without the special tool and darned near impossible to see from the outside.

Invite your locksmith over and have him install them in the sliding glass door and all the windows that can be reached from the first floor. It's a relatively inexpensive solution, and well worth the money.

An alarm system helps. (As suggested)

A noisy, obnoxious dog helps. (As suggested)

A gun helps, but only when you are home. Otherwise it's just something the BG will want to steal from you. Make sure it is readily accessible when you are home, in a central location in the house. Put it in a locked, pushbutton gun safe that's easy (for you) to open. You should be able to have it in your hand and loaded in seconds, even with trembling hands. Practice, practice, practice!!!!

Colleen...Please don't take what I said about wiring the door seriously..you will more likely hurt yourself or some other innocent!
And the part about the Dogs...I really like them.
I had a neighbor who kept five G shepards in an ares 15' by 30'..we were separated by a flimsey fence.I had to call the Board of health...they were living in excrement..one had mange, another went crazy and barked all day and night, the remainder would get sold..then they made more. The owner would torment them, to make them fierce, I guess. He is clearly a moron. I called the Board of Health since the guy made a big pile near my side door, called the cops, when he shoveled it over the fence and I shoveled it back, and then the Animal Rescue since I felt that it was abuse, they threatened him I guess, built my own huge fence. My house had not been lived in, I think the renters had been driven out. I think the neighbor was trying to make it unsaleable so he could buy it..he told me he wanted to...so I have seen pet ownership at it's worst. Soon after my fence went up the doge were gone.
A far cry from a half acre lot! That would be a little paridise for terriers.
My friend made the comment about lunch after I pointed out a person walking a small lap dog with a ribon on it's head..I said oh look at the cute little friend...it is her sense of humor..[actually she claims to prefer larger ones!!]Oh just noticed you live in 220 land...well you can get 440 volts no problem nicer flow still, one heck of a bug zapper Your aluminium screen door would go off like a flash bulb!..I better stop. P.S Wally World is Walmart store.

I didn't take it seriously, but I did have a good chuckle though.
