Dear Mr. Matson,,are there any instructors in the Uechi dicipline yet in the Detroit Michigan area? I moved here from New England (where there are many) to this large city and still cannot find a contact for Uechi instruction...Please advise...thank you ron mosrite@ameritech.net

Dear Mr.. Mattson:

Just wanted to say "thanks" for keeping your website. It is most informative. Although I generally do not participate in the forum discussions, I do read often. Wanted to say that I really like the new format. It's much easier to load, read, and navigate. Again, thanks for everything you do for Uechi!

Sincerely,
Lisa

Dear GEM,

I began my study of Uechi Ryu for 36 years. When I began this journey I never realized it would consume so much of me. Over the years I have had a very understanding wife. Knowing she was a karate wife, if I was needeed at home it was easy to get in toudh with me. She new I would not be at some bar , I would be teaching Uechi Ryu. I started this never ending quest in 1962 under the direction of Ronald Nietien at Minot Air Force Base,
Minot North Dakota. I was a student of his untile Feb. 1966. I tested for black belt at that time, and pormoted by him. In Oct. 1965. When I was discharged form the Air Force I went to work in the Bahama Islands, I thaught Uechi Ryu there for two years, Promoted serveral good 1st Degree Brown Belts.

I hope over the years they were able to continue there training with some other instructor. I moved around for a few years after leaving the Bahamas teaching where I went. In 1971 I enlisted in the U.S. Army . I was in and out of Okinawa on several short TDYs. In December 1972 I was Injured in VietNam and spent the next three and half years in and out hospitals and nurmous operations on my legs just to get me to walk . But that was the time that I
was able to learn the most about Uechi Ryu. I was not able to perform the movements physically, I had to perform everything mentally. Thats when I was able to start understanding how powerfull the katas really are. It was almost three years before I could start working out again. But when I started it was like I never took a break. Those learning experiences have become my corrnerstone to teaching the art. I have developed a deeper under standing of the working of our system because I am not able to perform the kicks the
way I did before the injuries. I teach a basic system of self defense straight from the katas. Instead of teaching power punching and power kicking I stress striking blocks and the one knuckle strike. Most of the students I teach are able to perform push ups on the one nuckle and within a year and are able to break a one inch board in mid air (not being held).

Well thats enough for now. I recieved a medical retirement in 1976 and moved to Augusta, Ga. After I moved here I have been able to continue my training with Richard Perkins in N. Carolina. I would like very much to be place on your list. Maybe I can find other Uechi practioners closer than Atlanta, Ga.

Thank you,
William H. Harris

A partial quadriplegic as a result of cerebral palsy, my parents ad I were told I would never walk, much less engage in any physical activity. I now hold a 3rd degree Black Belt in Karate-Ju-jiutsu and Kickboxing. Today I am the highest ranking physically challenged Black Belt in the World. In 1990-1993, I was several times the North-South German full contact
Kickboxing Champion. I was the first handicapped person ever to compete in a professional karate match not specifically intended for the physically challenged. I hold the world record for sit-ups (5,453 in 1 hour and 20 minute's non-stop). In 1997 I became four times the Texas state Champion as well five times U.S. National Champion in three different Associations.

In November of 1997 I finished the season with two silver medals in the World Karate Championships of the NBL-SKI.

In addition to my 15 plus years of experience as a personal trainer, martial arts instructor, and advocate for young people (in a variety of settings) I am an active stunt and fight coordinator for feature films, having worked with such professionals as Chuck Norris and Arnold Schwarzeneeger.

Sounds extraordinary, even to me. But it's not. Out of the ordinary, for sure, but extraordinary, not at all. The wisdom I applied, the strength I discovered, even the intensity of focus, which I have honed day in, and day out from childhood, lie within every human being.

My goal is to help others (especially those with tremendous obstacles before them) tap into and channel their own gifts for unlimited achievement.

Not merely an inspirational work, the project I'm proposing is a practical guide to goal attainment.

It works. I know.

Dear sirs,

I am looking for a way to order back copies of a magazine called either Karate World News or World Karate News. If anyone could give me an address or web-site to refer to it would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you.

Mr. Mattson,

Stumbled across your web site recently and would like to complement you on creating and running an excellent site.
I have been a student of the martial arts for over thirty years and have had the opportunity to study with some excellent people.
I have studied a number of art's but my main background has been in Hapikido,Taekwondo,Shotokan and Escrima. Due to the nature of my business my martial skills were often put to the test, and I am satisfied with my abilities from a practical standpoint. However, now recently semi-retired at the age of 50, I would like to explore
and learn some of the more refined areas of martial arts, especially those related to pressure points and applications. Uechi-ryu appears to be a style that would encompass a void in my martial search. I would greatly appreciate your advice and recommendation of materials that would get me pointed in the right direction.

Forever a student of the art's - Tom Paglia

Mattson-sensei;

I am a sho-dan and assistant instructor for Ed Huff.

During this past summer camp, I spent considerable time with Bill Glasheen "learning" the Supraempie Form. During that time, we were filmed for a production video. Bill asked me to contact him to provide him my name for the credits. I also have a few questions pretaining to the form.

On a separate note, I would also appreciate the name, telephone, and address of J. Hassel. I have been interested in kobudo weapons for some now and would like to talk to him. Do you know of anyone in the Boston area who teaches the bo, jo, sai, and ayaido (drawing the sword)?

Thank you.

SJB

Hope your weekend was great. Thought I would send a poem that has inspired me and
helped me in both good and bad times.

DESIDERATA

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy.

I am a martial arts student who has taken both Kenpo and Tae Kwon Do and while both very good forms of Martial Arts, I have not been fully pleased with them. After discussing this with my friends father (a uechi ryu student from the boston school some 25 or so years ago) I was propted to look into this style.

I am 25 years old, in good physical condition and live in the Fall River area. Do you have a school nearby and would it be possible to come in and look in on one of the classes.

One other thing, how much time (during the instruction of the classes) is given to meditation of the development of chi?

Hello Mr. Mattson,
It has been awhile since l had seen you as l was a competitor at your first World Championship Tournament in Boston a few years ago. My name is Mark Levine and l am a shodan in the Uechi-ryu karate out of Michigan. I have unfortunately been out of the martial arts for over a year (in which l see the cause as a Political issue). I had enjoyed the martial arts as it had brought within myself and inner peace. However, over the last two to three yrs l believe l have seen a drastic increase in politics within many systems. I assure you, I am not writing to you to complain or cry about anything in general or any particular person for that
matter. What l personally would like to express is my desire to continue my training and trying to find a way to pursue this. I know that sometimes we have to swallow our pride and take the first step towards making things better at where they have gone bad.
As i have stated earlier, l am shodan and would like to further my training. l have put forth the effort to get where l am today, yet l know there is still so much to learn and that l will never learn it all in this life time. Nor will anyone else for that matter. Before l had stopped going to classes (and had eventually faded from the dojo for personal reasons) l had a strong desire to be all l could. Well, l still have that desire, but need some help. Unfortunately l have no dojo that l go to and would like to be able to train on my own at home until l find another instructor that is more than just an instructor ( as we all have a life besides martial arts).
Would you be able to help me find some literature and/or videos for keeping my mind fresh and body in motion until i do so? l had started getting into the weapons and have a few of my own. However, once again i do not have the resorces to view when in a jam. l had also bought some weapons made of purple heart. Would you happen to know of any companies that deal in that type of wood?
Please respond as l am excited about continuing my training. Thank you very much,
Mark Levine

I am trying to find out if Howard Lee trained the Castenada group uechi-ryu. Do you know anything about this? And can you recommend a book about this art. Is there a spiritual side to the art as well?

Thank you for your time

Hi George,
How's things?
How was camp (need I ask!)?
Busy busy busy here - working two jobs, researching, teaching, and keeping my wife happy! How many are intersted in the Fuzhou trip next year? (perhaps you could put out a request for a "show of hands" (as it were) so that I can have some idea. As I said before, it would be nice to be there for the old man's 94th birthday, but January might prove a bad time, what with the family committments and work-loads of the American people. February might prove more agreeable for them.

I would suggest Okinawa first THEN Fuzhou (for resaerch/ammunition purposes). In consideration of expenses, the other option might be to forgo Oki altogether, and focus solely upon Fuzhou.Drop me a few lkines When time permits.

Sincerely,

Simon Lailey

Mattson sensei: The experiment with a dojo in a Health Club continues. Today (Saturday) we had our trimester test and 10 karateka from 8 to 50+ went through the rigors of a 2.5 hour test. All went well and we now have a new green belt, an orange belt (junior green in our club) and a mix of yellow belts for juniors and green stripes for seniors. Two more candidates were unable to attend but I expect to get with them within a week.

With the test behind us, we will start a new beginners class on 9/26. The big difference this time is that it is no longer free. In the past, many signed up and never or rarely showed up. Hopefully, by charging $50 (cheap by any standard) for the 4 month session those that sign up will be committed. I'm hoping for 10 to 12 new students who really want to learn, instead of the 20 or 30 that will wander away after a few weeks. Six have signed up so far. With any luck, we will have a dozen by next Saturday.

The 'Health Club' experiment has produced some nice results in the first full year, and we have a good core for the future. I will keep tinkering with the format until we optimize class size and retention. No tinkering with the content though, nothing but good, solid Uechi being practiced here. Wish us luck for our second year in the new facility.

Regards, Rich Castanet

Hi George,

Steve seems to have really gotten a lot out of camp. And while he was there someone tipped him to get us to invite our friends to come and we have four new students as a result. Hey! It Works!

Thought I'd remind you about our listing, though. My new phone number is 505-292-3675 and new email is iac1@unm.edu.

Also, when I click on New Mexico it takes me to the top of the list instead of to the state.

The sight is excellent and a tremendous recruiting asset! Congratulations!

And Thanks.

Sir,

Thank you for your prompt response, and for clarifying this small matter. I will now order from your site. I am now studying with Steven Goss, and have blackbelts in AAM KA JITSU and Kenpo Karate, and now I have found what I am looking for with Uechi Ryu. I recently picked up your book, and it is a great training aid. Hopefully I will have the pleasure of meeting you some time.

All The Best,

Carlos Carvajal

Sensei Mattson,

I have been studying Uechi-Ryu for about 15 years on and off. I am not presently studying at any Dojo, but I did get a copy of your book Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do and I am finding it quite informative. My goal now is to get back into shape by practicing what I know on my own until I can find some more time to continue my study more formally.

One question that I have is about Sanchin. Lets use the example of a right Sanchin strike. In your book, it looks as if Master Uechi draws is right fingertips down his left arm (which is still in Sanchin position) and then when his fingertips reach his elbow, he draws his right arm across his chest perpendicular to his left, then "locks it in the chamber" at his right side. Is this the way it is, or have I gotten the wrong impression from the pictures. The way I learned was to draw almost straight back, keeping the elbow tucked.

Sorry for such a bizzare question. I know it is one that really belongs in the dojo where it could be demostrated, but I don't have that luxury right now, unfortunately. I want to make sure I'm practicing it correctly.

Thanks very much in advance for any insight you can provide.

Sincerely,

David O'Keefe

Dear Mr. Mattson,

I would link to exchange links between our two sites. My site is located at http://tka.home.ml.org

Mr Mattson,

I am looking for a dojo in the Marlboro/Worcester area, are there any you can recommend?

Thank you for your help.

Dear George,

I have just ordered a copy of Art Rabesa's "Explosive Karate" through the web
site. . . .

Also, if I am correct, this November will mark the 50th aniversary of Kanbun
Uechi's death. Is there any type of celebration or memorial tribute being
planned?

Sincerely,

Hi George,

In the mail bag, some person name Andrea Fraser was looking for a place to stay while she is on rotation at the New England Aquarium. She mentioned in a followup email that she has a room at Angel Memorial and that it may be far from the Aquarium. You should let her know that Angel Memorial Animal Hospital in JP (if that's what she is referring to) is not that far at all from the Aquarium. She can go one to the other by public transportation within half an hour.

I don't know of places she can stay. But, she is welcome to contact me if she is looking for advice on how to get around town, or to work out in Chinatown if she is interested.

I am still on vacation and will head back to Maine today. Hope to see you next Saturday.

Sir:
Sometime ago, I heard a story, a rumor that there was a lost kata in uechi. Originally, one of my teachers had told me that there were 2 of them, another said there was only one. That One kata being Suparenpai. In reading some texts on Goju Ryu, I discovered that there were 3 versions of Suparenpai. And that at one time Kururunfa was apart of Suparenpai, but the two were separated due to their extreme length.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Kanbum Uechi may have learned Suparenpai, but chose not to teach it? Or was the idea of a 4th "lost" kata just idle guessing on the part of some very fertile imaginations?

Any help that you could give me would be appreciated.

Thank You

Ron Shively

Sir: After watching your video, I contacted some other chinese stylists I knew who possibly gave me some insight into what I was watching. After watching other goju ryu katas, I was able to see that Miyagi used his version of suparempai as the "mother" kata for his other forms such as geksai, tensho, etc.

As a chinese stylist I know that traditional T'ai Chi Ch'uan, Pa-kua ch'ang, hsing-I ch'uan and some older forms of southern shaloin are interlinkable. That is the forms are able to be performed continually as a continious drill format. Also, that there are several sub forms/katas that are derived from the longer versions. The sub katas are also linkable as shorter, continuous drills.

Is it possible that the suparempai form that is considered "lost" isn't actually lost, but is really nothing more than the combined katas of sanchin, seisan, and sanseiru together in different amounts? That possibly it isn't really lost. that we were given 3 different pieces to a puzzle and that the "lost" kata and/or mother kata to the system exists when all three are combined in some format? That all that is really needed is to put the pieces together in proper order?

Alot of chinese instructors use this approach over direct explanation. The same way that striking and grappling are taught separately. Many of them are waiting to see just who is smart enough to put the pieces together.

Thanks again for your prompt service

Ron Shively

More interesting information from Ron

. . .I didn't base my premise upon just Simon's version of suparempai. I also watched the goju version, as well as talked to other southern chinese martial artists. As far as which specific method/style of suparempai he studied: tiger boxing, crane boxing, dog boxing, lion boxing, etc. who could say.

As a chinese stylist I am familiar with the idea of the "mother" kata as it applies to the martial arts. Thereby being one long form that is broken down into several other kata for ease of training, and as a test for character. If the guy had poor character, he didn't know how to combine the sub katas into the singular "mother" kata or form. All he had was several shorter katas with no clue as to how they would be joined together. Several styles of southern shaolin, T'ai Chi, Pa-Kua, Hsing-I, and Long Fist use this concept as well.

One long kata/form was actually one entire system or style of martial arts. You would learn several different parts. How well you understood them and how well they would fit together like pieces in a puzzle.

Thanks Again

Ron Shively

Mattson-Sensei -

I would also like to express my thanks for the recent summer camp. My name is Chris Long, currently a Sandan, and one of Glasheen-Sensei's Virginia contingent. When I was assigned to Japan with the Air Force, I managed to hook up with Takamiyagi-Sensei, and somehow got promoted to Sandan. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then...

Anyways, I would love to have the small dojo I am running listed on your web site. I teach for Northern Arizona University three times per week. My home number is (520)226-1497. In case you need it, class times are Mon & Wed 2000-2130 and Sun 1800-1930 in the Recreation Center. NAU is located in Flagstaff, Arizona. I am running the dojo under both Takamiyagi-Sensei (as an oversight) and Saddler-Sensei of Phoenix. Technically I am under ShoHei Ryu, but training matters much more to me than affiliation.

If at all possible, could you forward contact numbers (phone, address, or e-mail) for Roy Bedard and Kimo Wall? I really connected with both at your fantastic camp.

Thanks for all your support and work. I look forward to seeing you next August.

Chris Long

Dear Sensei Mattson:

My Sensei and the students from my dojo in Uxbridge(Canada), wish to thank you for the excellent time they had at this year's camp. They emphasized the fact that "IT WAS THE BEST CAMP EVER"!

Although I did not attend, I will be there next year.

Sincerely,

Tim Koressis

Sensei,

I was wondering if you would do me a small favor. One of the camp's attendees had asked me to give her information on practitioners/instructors of Yamani Ryu bojutsu in LA, so that she might be able to continue training. Her name is Beatrix and she was going to be leaving for LA a few weeks after camp. If possible, please forward the following information to her:

I was browsing and saw your web site.
While stationed in Okinawa with the 3rd Marine Division--I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman--I studied under Master Uechi and his son. I was a student in 1959 and 1960. Just wanted to say Hello. My respects and best regards. G.B.((graham spillman, jr.)

Hi George,
Haven't written you in a while, but want you to know that I keep up with what's happening by visiting your Website which I enjoy very much. It's a great means of expression for the Uechi extended family, and an outstanding source of information. Courtesy of your site, I encountered a letter indicating a high level practictioner was teaching here in San Diego, and since then I've been working out with Jerry McDonald. We have some fine people studying Uechi (why is it that Uechi Ryu seems to attract such good people?) and it feels
great for me to be in a class situation again (after studying 10 years with one work-out partner and on my own). I can see my form improving, as well as my knowledge of Okinawan terminology, and I am refreshing my ability in the exercises and kumite. Studying alone helped me to appreciate Sanchin, and helped me develop my self-motivation, and now it's just right to return to the group environment.

When you next have an inclination or occasion to visit San Diego, think of us.

Best regards,

Paul Haydu

Try this.

DEMONSTRATED THE SCHACHN AND GAVE ME A NICE BLOW TO THE AB'S STANCE HAS POWER. I CONTINUED TO ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT HISTORY AND PICTURES. AT THE TIME I WAS INVITED TO WORK OUT TUESDAY. MY EYES WERE OPENED WITH THE BLOWS THAT LASTED 45 MIN, HAD 2 FRENCH BLACK BELTS WORK ME OVER, I HELD MT OWN-NOT A BACK STEP OR A EATI OR STOP, JUST WENT UNTIL SENSEI SAID STOP. DAMM I WAS SORE FOR THE NEXT WEEK, THAT WAS 3 WEEKS AGO MY HEART AND MIND IS TOTALLY INTO IT NOW. I AM 30 YEARS OLD AND 6'4" AT 210 WITH ABOUT 4 YEARS OF TKD AND KICK BOXING. I studied Ueichi-Ryu with an instructor named Richard Pinkham. This was 25 years ago. I was wondering if you know of his whereabouts. I know he studied with the Mattson academy at one time. His last instructors name was Jon Conroy. Any info would be appreciated.

Tim Emerson

Well, Ed fially had his court date. Unfortunatly I do not have any good news. Long story, but the bottom line is he plead guilty to a lesser charge, so I guess there is not much to be done beyond this. I want to thank you again for keeping in touch and keeping an open mind through all of this. I would still try to defend Ed's integrity, but he made decisions for his own reasons that have shut a lot of doors for him. (Although he took a guilty plea for a year instead of facing 7 to 15 years). Part of his trouble was co-operating with the investigators instead of getting a lawyer. The investigators did their job well and got Ed to agree to certain things that in the long run limited his ability to defend himself. But, as I said earlier, Ed chose to plead guilty and there's not much I can write to make it sound any better than it is. So I guess this will be my last correspondence as there is little else to be said. Unfortunatly Ed was the only instructor we could afford in this style, so my son has reverted to Tae
Kwon Do and has been doing very well. Take care--

WHAT IS AAU KARATE?

With a membership of over a half million Americans, the Amatuer Athletic Union is one of the largest non-profit volunteer sports organizations in the United States. The AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amatuer sports and physical fitness programs for youth and adults.

The AAU Karate Program offers:
* Insurance Programs
* Developmental Competition Programs
* National Level Competition
* AAU Junior Olympic Games
* Referee Certification
* Coaches' Education/Certification
* Rank Certification

The AAU Karate Program provides a competition format that is built on the foundation of international governing bodies of traditional style karate-do competition. These rules are well designed to meet two objectives - to promote fundamentally strong karate practice, and to do so as safely and fairly as possible through qualified officiating and coaching. Training our athletes, coaches, and officials to participate in AAU events can motivate our students thereby improving the level of training where it counts most - on our dojo floors.

There are three levels of karate competition offered by the AAU -association, regional, and national. The association level provides a low-key developmental approach for all ages and levels, the regional events provide an intermediate level, while the AAU National Championships and AAU Junior Olympics provide opportunities to experience national level competition.

The New England AAU Karate Association offers competition for karate students from age five through adult. Our association events provide a safe and supportive environment to introduce beginners to the sport of competition karate, and provide students of all levels with a competitive experience that best reflects the traditional principles we try to promote in our dojo. There are no minimum rank limitations; any student who knows even their first basic kata can participate. Students always learn and grow by competing with others of similar age and rank. The growth and development of our athletes is always the highest priority.

On the high end, elite AAU karate athletes have opportunities to step beyond the national events and experience world-class international competition. Last March, two athletes from our New England Association were invited to play on the WKO/USA team in the WKO World Cup competition in Orlando, Florida. This fall, three junior athletes from our association have been invited to represent the WKO/USA team in the upcoming WKO Junior World Cup competition in Budapest! Jenna Godfrey of Okinawan Karate Academy and sisters Kristy and Mandy Smith of Richie Bernard's House of the Samurai in Londonderry NH were invited due to their medal-winning performances at the AAU National Championships and AAU Junior Olympics earlier this year.

THE BITTER TRUTH ABOUT ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

Aspartame sugar substitutes cause worrying symptoms from memory loss to brain tumours. But despite US FDA approval as a 'safe'food additive, aspartame is one of the most dangerous substances ever to be foisted upon an unsuspecting public.

" EQUAL "

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names, NutraSweet, "Equal", Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965, when James Schlatter, achemist of G.D. Searle Company was testing an anti-ulcer drug. Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W.Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle's research practices caused the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and madeSearle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame is, by far, the most dangerous substance on the market that is added to foods. Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Many of these reactions are very serious
including seizures and death as recently disclosed in a February 1994 Department of Health and Human Services report.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue,
irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease,
alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birthdefects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: Aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book, "Prescription for Nutritional Healing", by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of "chemical poison." As you shall see, that is exactly what it is.

ASPARTIC ACID (40% OF ASPARTAME)
Dr Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, recently published a book thoroughly detailing the damage that is caused by the ingestion of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. [Ninety nine percent of monosodium
glutamate 9MSG) is glutamic acid. The damage it causes is also documented in Blaylock's book.] Blaylock makes use of almost 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid in our food supply are
causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.(3)

SUMMARY OF HOW ASPARTATE (AND GLUTAMATE) CAUSE DAMAGE
Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmittion of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

The blood brain barrier (BBB) which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions,
and 4) allows seepage of excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.

The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75%+) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure excitatory amino acid damage include:

Multiple sclerosis (MS), ALS, memory loss, hormonal problems, hearing loss, epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, hypoglycemia, AIDS dementia, brain lessions, and neuroendocrine disorders.

The risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly, and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies For Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimmicks the
FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that "it is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants, and children. The Existence of evidence of potential endocrine responses, i.e., elevated cortisol and prolactin, and differential responses between males and females, would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that supplemental L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders."(4) Aspartic acid from aspartame has the same deleterious effects on the body as glutamic acid.

The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamateand aspartate is currently being debated. As reported to the FDA, those reactions include:(5) Headaches/migraines, nausea, abdominal pains, fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain), sleep problems,
vision problems, anxiety attacks, depression, and asthma/chest tightness.

One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Ironically, in 1987, G.D. Searle, the manufacturer of aspartame, undertook a search for a drug to combat memory loss caused by excititory amino acid damage. Blaylock is one of many scientists and physicians who are concerned about excititory amino acid damage caused by ingestion of aspartame and MSG. A few of the many experts who have spoken out against the damage being caused by aspartate and glutamate include Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist specializing in research design. Another is
Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher, and one of the world's foremost authorities on excitotoxins. (He informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brain of mice. Also included is Francis J. Waickman, M.D., a recipient of the Rinkeland Forman Awards, and Board certified in Pediatrics, Allergy, and Immunology.

Other concerned scientists include: John R. Hain, M.D., Board Certified Forensic Pathologist, and H.J. Roberts, M.D., FACP, FCCP, Diabetic Specialist, and selected by a national medical publicationas "The Best Doctor in the US"

John Samuels is concerned, also. He compiled a list of scientific research sufficient to show the dangers of ingesting excess free glutamic and aspartic acid.

And there are many more who can be added to this long list.

PHENYLALANINE (50% OF ASPARTAME)
Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. Persons with the genetic disorder, phenylketonuria (PKU) cannotmetabolize phenylalanine. This leads to dangerously high levels of phenylalanine in the brain (sometimes lethal). It has been shown that ingesting aspartame, especially along with carbohydrates can lead to excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain even in persons who do not have PKU. This is not just a theory, as many people who have eaten large amounts of aspartame over a long period of time and do not have PKU have been shown to have excessive levels of phenylalanine in the
blood. Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain can cause the levels of seratonin in the brain to decrease, leading to emotional disorders such as depression. It was shown in human testing that phenylalanine levels of the blood were increased significantly in
human subjects who chronically used aspartame.(6) Even a single use of aspartame
raised the blood phenylalanine levels. In his testimony before the US Congress, Dr Louis J. Elsas showed that high blood phenylalanine can be concentrated in parts of the brain, and is especially dangerous for infants and fetuses. He also showed that phenylalanine is
metabolised much more effeciently by rodents than by humans.(7)

One account of a case of extremely high phenylalanine levels caused by aspartame was recently published the the "Wednesday Journal" in an article entitled "An Aspartame Nightmare." John Cook began drinking 6 to 8 diet drinks every day. His symptoms started out as memory loss and frequent headaches. He began to crave more aspartame-sweetened drinks. His condition deteriorated so much that he experienced wide
mood swings and violent rages. Even though he did not suffer from PKU, a blood test revealed a phenylalanine level of80 mg/dl. He also showed abnormal brain function and brain damage. After he kicked his aspartame habit, his symptoms improved dramatically.(8)

As Blaylock points out in his book, early studies measuring phenylalanine buildup in the brain were flawed. Investigators who measured specific brain regions and not the average throughout the brain notice significant rises in phenylalanine levels. Specifically the hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, and corpus striatum areas of the brain had the largest increases in phenylalanine. Blaylock goes on to point out that excessive buildup of phenylalanine in the brain can cause schizophrenia or make one more susceptible to seizures.

Therefore, long-term, excessive use of aspartame may provided a boost to sales of seratonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac and drugs to control schizophrenia and seizures.

METHANOL (AKA WOOD ALCOHOL/POISON) (10% OF ASPARTAME)
Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. Some people may remember methanol as the poison that has caused some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.

The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a "food" product such as Jello).

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.(9)

Symptoms from methanol poisoning include headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, and neuritis. The most well knowm problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems includingmisty vision,
progressive contraction of visual fields, blurring of vision, obscuration of vision, retinal damage, and blindness. Formaldehye is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, causes birth defects.(10) Due to the lack of a couple of
key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to thetoxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."(11)

He was so concerned about the unresolved safety issues that he filed suit with the FDA requesting a hearing to address these issues. He asked the FDA to "slow down on this soft drink issue long enough to answer some of the important questions. "It's not fair that you are leaving the full burden of proof on the few of us who are concerned and have such limited resources. You must remember that you are the American public's last defense. Once you allow usage (of aspartame) there is literally nothing I or my colleagues can do to reverse the course. Aspartame will then join saccharin, the sulfiting agents, and God knows how many other questionable compounds enjoined to insult the human constitution with
governmental approval."(10) Shortly thereafter, the Commissioner of the FDA, Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr.,approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he then left for a position with G.D. Searle's Public Relations firm.(11)

It has been pointed out that some fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, however, that methanol never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an
antidote for methanol toxicity in humans.(9) The troops of Desert Storm were "treated" to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages which had been heated to over 86o F. in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses.
Other breakdown products of aspartame such as DKP (discussed below) may also have been a factor.

In a 1993 act that can only be described as "unconscionable," the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 86°ree;F (30°ree;C).

DIKETOPIPERAZINE (DKP)
DKP is a by-product of aspartame metabolism. DKP has been implicated in the occurance of brain tumors. Olney noticed that DKP, when nitrosated in the gut, produced a compound which was similar to N-nitrosourea, a powerful brain tumor causing chemical. Some authors have said that DKP is produced after aspartame ingestion. I am not sure if that is correct. It is definately true that DKP is formed in liquid aspartame-containing products during prolonged storage.

G.D. Searle conducted animal experiments on the safety of DKP. TheFDA found numerous experimental errors occured, including "clerical errors, mixed-up animals, animals not getting drugs they were supposed to get, pathological specimens lost because of improper handling," and many other errors.(12) These sloppy laboratory procedures may explain why both the test and control animals had sixteen times more brain tumors than would be expected in experiments of this length.

In an ironic twist, shortly after these experimental errors were discovered, the FDA used guidelines recommened by G.D. Searle todevlop the Industry-wide FDA standards for Good Laboratory Practies.(11)

DKP has also been implicated as a cause of uterine polyps and changes in blood cholesterol by FDA Toxicologist Dr Jacqueline Verrett in her testimony before the US Senate.(13)

AILMENTS RESULTING FROM ASPARTAME
The components of aspartame can lead to a wide variety o failments. Some of these problems occur gradually, others are immediate, acute reactions.

There is an enormous population of people who are suffering from symtpoms contributed to by aspartame, yet they have no idea why herbs or drugs are not helping relieve their problems. There are other users of aspartame who appear not to be suffering immediate reactions to aspartame. But even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP. A few of the many disorders that are of particular concern to me include the following.

Birth Defects.
Dr Diana Dow Edwards, a researcher was funded by Monsanto to study possible birth defects caused by the ingestion of aspartame. After preliminary data showed damaging information about aspartame, funding for the study was cut off. A Gentetic Pediatrician at Emory University has testified that aspartame is causing birth defects.7360-367.

In the book, "While Waiting: A Prenatal Guidebook" by GeorgeR. Verrilli, M.D. and Anne Marie Mueser, it is stated that aspartame is suspected of causing brain damage in sensitive individuals. A fetus may be at risk for these effects. Some researchers have suggested that high doses of aspartame may be associated with problems ranging from dizziness and subtle brain changes to mental retardation.

Cancer (Brain Cancer).
In 1981, Satya Dubey, an FDA statistician, stated that the brain tumor data on aspartame was so "worrisome" that he could not recommend approval of NutraSweet.(14) In a two-year study conducted by the manufacturer of aspartame, twelve of the 320 rats fed a normal diet and aspartame developed brain tumors while none of the control rats had tumors. Five of the twelve tumors were in rats given a low dose of aspartame.(15) The approval of aspartame was a violation of the Delaney Amendment which was supposed to prevent cancer-causing substances such as methanol (formaldehye) and DKP from entering our food supply. The late Dr Adrian Gross, an FDA toxicologist, testified before the US Congress that aspartame was capable of producing brain tumors. This made it illegal for the FDA to set an allowable daily intake at any level. He stated in his testimony that Searle's studies were "to a large extent unreliable" and that "at least one of thosestudies has established beyond any reasonable doubt that aspartame is capable of inducing brain tumors in experimental animals...." He concluded his testimony by asking, "What is the reason for the apparent refusal by the FDA to invoke for this food additive theso-called Delaney Amendment to the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act? ....And if the FDA itself elects to
violate the law, who is left to protect the health of the public?"(16)

In the mid-1970s it was discovered that the manufacturer of aspartame falsified studies in several ways. One of the techniques used was to cut tumors out of test animals and put them back in the study. Another technique used to falsify the studies was to list animals
that had actually died as surviving the study. Thus, the data on brain tumors was likely worse than discussed above. In addition, a former employee of the manufacturer of aspartame, Raymond Schroedertold the FDA on July 13, 1977 that the particles of DKP were so large that the rats could dicriminate between the DKP and their normal diet.(12)

It is interesting to note that the incidence of brain tumors in persons over 65 years of age has increase 67% between the years 1973 and 1990. Brain tumors in all age groups has jumped 10%. The greatest increase has come during the years 1985-1987.(17)

In his book, "Aspartame (NutraSweet)". Is it Safe?, Roberts gives evidence that aspartame can cause a particularly dangerous form of cancer - primary lymphoma of the brain.

Diabetes.
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is actually recommending this chemical poison to persons with diabetes. According to research conducted by H.J. Roberts, a diabetes specialist, a member of the ADA,and an authority on artificial sweetners, aspartame:
1) Leads to the precipitation of clinical diabetes.
2) Causes poorer diabetic control in diebetics on insulin or oral drugs.
3) Leads to the aggravation of diabetic complications such asretinopathy, cataracts, neuropathy and gastroparesis.
4) Causes convulsions.

In a statement concerning the use of products containing aspartain by persons with diabetes and hypoglycemia, Roberts says: "Unfortunately, many patients in my practice, and others seen in consultation, developed serious metabolic, neurologic and other complications that could be specifically attributed to using aspartame products. This was evidenced by: "The loss of diabetic control, the intensification of hypoglycemia, the occurrence of presumed 'insulin reactions' (including convulsions) that proved to be aspartame reactions, and the precipitation, aggravation or simulation of diabetic
complications (especially impaired vision and neuropathy) while using these products.

"Dramatic improvement of such features after avoiding aspartame, and the prompt predictable recurrence of these problems when the patient resumed aspartame products, knowingly or inadvertently."

Roberts goes on to say:
"I regret the failure of other physicians and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) to sound appropriate warnings to patients and consumers based on these repeated findings which have been described in my corporate-neutral studies and publications."

Blaylock stated that excitotoxins such as that found in aspartame can precipitate diabetes in persons who are genetically susceptible to the disease.(5)

Emotional Disorders.
A double blind study of the effects of aspartame on persons with mood disorders was recently conducted by Dr Ralph G. Walton. Since the study wasn't funded/controlled by the makers of aspartame, TheNutraSweet Company refused to sell him the aspartame. Walton was forced to obtain and certify it from an outside source.

The study showed a large increase in serious symptoms for persons taking aspartame. Since some of the symptoms were so serious, the Institutional Review Board had to stop the study. Three of the participants had said that they had been "poisoned" by aspartame. Walton concludes that "individuals with mood disorders are particularly sensitive to this artificial sweetener; its use in this population should be discouraged."(18) Aware that the experiment could not be repeated because of the danger to the test subjects, Walton was recently quoted as saying, "I know it causes seizures. I'm convinced also that it definitely causes behavioral changes. I'm ver yangry that this substance is on the market. I personally question there liability and validity of any studies funded by the NutraSweetCompany."(19)

There are numerous reported cases of low brain serotonin levels, depression and other emotional disorders that have been linked to aspartame and often are relieved by stopping the intake of aspartame. Researchers have pointed out that increasing in thenylalanine levels
in the brain, which can and does occur in persons without PKU, leads to a decreased level of the neurotransmitter, serotonin, which leads to a variety of emotional disorders. Dr William M. Pardridge of UCLA testified before the US Senate that a youth drinking four 16-ounce bottles of diet soda per day leads to an enormous increase in the phenylalanine level.

Epilepsy/Seizures.
With the large and growing number of seizures caused by spartame, it is sad to see that the Epilepsy Foundation is promoting the "safety" of aspartame. At Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 80 people who had suffered seizures after ingesting aspartame were surveyed. Community Nutrition Institute concluded the following about the survey:

"These 80 cases meet the FDA's own definition of an imminent hazard to the public health, which requires the FDA to expeditiously remove a product from the market."

Both the Air Force's magazine Flying Safety and the Navy's magazine, Navy Physiology published articles warning about the many dangers of aspartame including the cumlative deliterious effectsof methanol and the greater likelihood of birth defects. The articles note that the ingestion of aspartame can make pilots more susceptible to seizures and vertigo. Twenty articles sounding warnings about ingesting aspartame while flying have also appeared in the National Business Aircraft Association Digest (NBAA igest1993),
Aviation Medical Bulletin (1988), The AviationConsumer (1988), Canadian General Aviation News (1990), Pacific Flyer (1988), General Aviation News (1989), Aviation Safety Digest (1989), and Plane & Pilot(1990) and a paper warning about aspartame was presented at the 57th Annual Meeting of the Aerospace Medical Association (Gaffney
1986).

Recently, a hotline was set up for pilots suffering from acute reactions to aspartame ingestion. Over 600 pilots have reported symptoms including some who have reported suffering grand mal seizures in the cockpit due to aspartame.(21)

One of the original studies on aspartame was performed in 1969 by an independent scientist, Dr Harry Waisman. He studied the effects of aspartame on infant primates. Out of the seven infant monkeys, one died after 300 days and five others had grand mal seizures. Of course, these negative findings were not submitted to the FDA during the approval process.(22)

Why don't we hear about these things?

The reason many people do not hear about serious reactions to aspartame is twofold:
1) Lack of awareness by the general population. Aspartame-caused diseases are not reported in the newspapers like plane crashes. This is because these incidents occur one at a time in thousands of different locations across the US.
2) Most people do not associate their symptoms with the long-term use of aspartame. For the people who have killed a significant percentage of the brain cells and thereby caused a chronic illness, there is no way that they would normally associate such an illness with aspartame consumption. How aspartame was approved is a lesson in how chemical
and pharmaceutical companies can manipulate government agencies such as the FDA, "bribe" organizations such as the American Dietetic Association, and flood the scientific community with flawed and fraudulent industry-sponsored studies funded by the makers of
aspartame.

Erik Millstone, a researcher at the Science Policy Research Unit of Sussex University has compiled thousands of pages of evidence, some of which have been obtained using the freedom of information act23, showing:
1. Laboratory tests were faked and dangers were concealed.
2. Tumors were removed from animals and animals that had died were "restored to life" in laboratory records.
3. False and misleading statements were made to the FDA.
4. The two US Attorneys given the task of bringing fraud charges against the aspartame manufacturer took positions with the manufacturer's law firm, letting the statute of limitations run out.
