Looking for Dojo
My father studied under Kanei Uechi for many years while living in Okinawa. I have limited study under my father and would love to find formal training. Oklahoma seems a bit barren in different styles. Does anyone know of a school that at least touches on this style?
Thank you for any insight you may have.

Dojo?
Many US states don't have Uechi dojos. I didn't see anything under Oklamhoma in the dojo directory for that state. You may be able to connect with another close state where you can travel once a month to work out. It is a tough thing to do but can be done. Good luck in your search.

Thank you. I am going to get some dvd's to work with, and may resort to travel for hands on instruction. I guess anything worth doing will have some hardships.

I may be dealing with the same thing as you, Davion. I more than likely will have to move to Cincinnati where there is no Uechi. I have invested 17 years in Uechi, split by 9 years. I love my Uechi and hate the thought of not having my Uechi brothers and sisters to work with. I am not sure, at this point, what I will do....I don't have to make that decision until next June when I know the future.
Many good dvd's out there. George, Bill, Van, Dana, or any number of really good Uechi people on the Forum can recommend some good ones for you.
Plus, keep checking. You never know when a Uechi person might move to your state.

Vicki

Davion,
I've been looking for an Uechi Dojo in Oklahoma too.
The closest one I can find is in Denton, Texas.
I'm only about an hour and a half from Denton though.
I live in Tishomingo about 2 hours South of Norman
depending on how fast you like to drive on 35
.
So far I haven't had any luck in finding the time to
get there but it will happen. Even if only a
couple of times a month it will be worth it.
Maybe we can arange a meeting some time and try
and get there.
He has classes on Saturday mornings which would
be perfect.

I read these words and it strikes me odd that you folks are willing to travel for many miles and so many folks who are 2 miles away from their Dojo never drag their butts in to work out.
Too many excuses.
You foks have the will, so you will surely find the way.
There was a guy in the 60's who used George Mattsons book "Way of Karate" while travelling on board a ship in the Navy and successfully tested for Shodan.
Or so the legend goes!!
Create your own legends.
Good luck.

Yes sir.
I'm willing to do some traveling to learn Uechi.
The ShotoKan classes I am currently teaching
are a good 40 miles from my home. I make this
trip 2 and sometimes 3 times a week.
My pay is 40.00 a class and the only reason I accept
the money is the gas prices and believe me it takes
nearly all of it! I'm just that devoted to what I love.
The story about the guy on the ship is great and reminds
me of a fellow I knew back in the 80's.
This guy read and learned everything he could
about ShotoKan from books. I mean kata, everything.
He finally joined a ShotoKan Dojo in August
of 85 and succsessfully tested for Shodan in
June of 86. Now this was after of studying and
practicing everything from books for nearly 4 years.
True story. I was there to witness it

Aye that sounds like a good idea. I am in Purcell, the giant town, right on 35. Drop me a line next time you plan on going. We can carpool, switch rides, we can work out something for trips. It is looking like this is the closest option for us Middle America dwellers.
