CONCEALED WEAPONS

Post by Bill Glasheen »

From the Associated Press, Richmond Times Dispatch, FWIW
CONCEALED WEAPONS - Former law enforcement officers would be allowed to carry concealed weapons into states that ban them under legislation approved yesterday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill - approved by a 18-1 vote - now goes to the full Senate.
The legislation applies to retired as well as off-duty law enforcement officers who are in good standing with their departments, senators said.
Actually, I'm wondering about the wording of this. Generally when they say "concealed weapons," what they really mean is concealed firearms. There's no lobby out there for other weapons...

Rich

Long time no hear from! Hope you are doing well.

Thanks for the extra info. Virginia is a state where a person can carry a concealed firearm (with permit), but is pretty restrictive on other weapons.

Glasheen-Sensei,

I carry about a dozen "concealed weapons" on my person every day - all of them "street legal," too!

Let's see - Inventory:

Key chain with keys, 6 half dollar coins, 1 large (3") brass Chinese coin relpica, one belt (leather), 2 pens (steel shank type, heavy, commercially available as "Ph.D."), wallet (makes a great palm protector from knife attacks as it's a tri-fold with lots of junk inside), a Palm Pilot in a leather case (same use), a cell phone, pocket change and a Leatherman tool.

ALL of these, if used properly make pretty good weapons. And, having worked with them in practice over the years, I have a pretty good grasp of their use.

IMHO, too many people limit their thinking when someone uses the word "weapon." Such limited thinking (as you pointed out regarding the idea that a concealed weapon usually means a firearm) can get someone killed, unnecessarily.

Could it be that we need to "raise the consciousness" of some folks out there to quit thinking traditionally when thinking of weapons?

Kobudo developed from people who were forced to "think outside the edge of the blade," after all.

Maybe it's time we martial artists started doing the same for MODERN items - developing a NEW kobudo.

After all - art does mean an act of creation in one of its definitions. Doesn't it?

Respectfully,

Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

An additional comment on Florida... They are not an open carry state. Handguns must be concealed and the uers must have a permit. By contrast, Virginia is an open carry state. No permit is required to carry an unconcealed handgun if the that person is not a felon etc. Many states are like that.

Also, in VA, a permit holder cannot take a concealed weapon into any establishment that serves alcoholic beverages. However, the open carry law applies unless the establishment prohibits that practice.

NC does not accept the VA permit but is also open carry. So, when crossing the state line in my car I just take the firearm out of my pocket and lay it on the seat in clear view. But remember, use common sense as any visible firearm is subject to scrutiny.

If you travel north to DC or MD or NJ, it is best to leave the weapon at home. The police and policies up there are more danger to you than the bad guys.

Comments?
