Businesses that don’t want any folks bringing handguns into their buildings will have to post a sign, conspicuously.
Three years ago, when Minnesota’s conceal-carry law was young there were signs all over the place. And folks have become accustomed to seeing them. The signs, like the interest in getting a conceal-carry permit, have declined somewhat over time, according Darrell Ehrlick, editor of the Winona, Minn., newspaper.
Self-defense laws on the rise

South Carolina State of Emergency Bill on the Move!
Friday, April 07, 2006
Thanks to phone calls from NRA members H. 4681, introduced by Representative Mike Pitts (R-14), unanimously passed the House Judiciary Committee’s Constitutional Laws Subcommittee with an added amendment that further strengthens the bill. H 4681 will now come before the full Judiciary Committee.
This legislation would remove the ability of local governments to restrict the use, sale, or transportation of firearms during a state of emergency, and would also prohibit South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) from releasing the personal information of Right-to-Carry (RTC) permit holders unless the request for the information is part of an investigation by law enforcement.
Glenn: A few years ago Virginia passed a 'preemptiion' law that made CHP laws uniform throughout the state. The 'Northern' Virginians can no longer impose their will on the rest of us should we visit that part of the state. In a few years I suspect Nebraska will pass a similar fix.

Louisiana is the state that confiscated weapons from law abiding citizens in the wake of Katrina. These citizens were left defenseless during a time of anarchy. The city of New Orleans is still unlawfully holding over 1,000 of these confiscated firearms with no time table for their return.
However, the state legislature has taken an important step to prevent this from reoccuring...
Louisiana Bill Protects Evacuees` Gun Rights
With little debate, the Louisiana Senate voted 39-0 for a bill that would prohibit police from confiscating firearms of law-abiding citizens in times of emergencies or disasters.
As noted earlier in this thread the Governor of Virginia recently signed a similar law that goes into effect July 1 of this year.

Freedom continues its expansion. This just in from Arizona:
Bill Strengthens Rights To Self-Defense
The state House has passed a bill to strengthen Arizonans` rights to self-defense and to use force against intruders.
Part of the bill expands Arizona's recognition of out of state permits to all states. Wow. When it goes into effect Virginia's permit will be recognized in 21 states!

It just keeps getting better...
Louisiana Panel Backs Self-Defense Related Suit Limits
A Louisiana House committee endorsed legislation April 18 that would protect homeowners who defend themselves from being sued.

N.O. Police Returning Guns Confiscated Post-Katrina
Under pressure from the National Rifle Association, police this week began returning guns confiscated after Hurricane Katrina. The NRA and other groups sued the city, saying it took away people's means of protection amid the lawlessness that gripped New Orleans.

Unfortunately for those living in parts of the Northeast...
Bloomberg Invites Mayors Discuss Guns
More than a dozen mayors are to meet at Gracie Mansion next week to discuss ways of stopping illegal gun traffic and reducing gun violence. Mayors Michael R. Bloomberg of New York and Thomas M. Menino of Boston are organizing the meeting, which will be attended by mayors from Seattle, Dallas, Washington, Milwaukee and cities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
Can you say 'ban guns from law abiding citizens"?

Good news in Virginia as well...
Legislation to make the VA CHP permanent for law abiding citizens sits on the Gov's desk. No more 5 year renewals required! Also a bill to eliminate fingerprinting of law abiding citizens who renew thier CHP is awaiting a signature.
Gov. Kaine is reflexively liberal so we will have to wait a few days on this. However, as he also wants to have a large tax increase (another reflex of his) he might want to appease the firearm owners a bit.

More good news... Oklahoma is bolstering its self defense laws with a veto proof bill:
Bill Gives More Protection To Gun Owners
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A bill to expand legal protections to people who shoot or use other deadly force when threatened or attacked easily passed the state Senate on Tuesday.
The state House, which approved the bill earlier on a 96-2 vote, will now vote on the Senate-passed bill in a procedural move necessary before it goes on to Gov. Brad Henry to be signed into law.
Senators voted 39-5 for the bill, despite arguments it could lead to more street violence.
What a great time to be alive!

And just in from Michigan:
LANSING, Mich. The state House has passed bills that supporters say would strengthen and clarify self-defense rights in Michigan.
The four-bill package is backed by the National Rifle Association but opposed by anti-gun groups including the Million Mom March.
A key provision in the legislation is a presumption that someone who forcibly enters a home or a vehicle intends to harm the occupant.
The legislation also would eliminate a requirement that people being attacked must retreat before responding.
The legislation now goes to the Senate, which has introduced its own version of the bills.

UGH!UK Competitive Shooters Can`t Train at Home
English Lawmakers want to change gun-control laws - some of the strictest in Europe - that force Britain`s competitive shooters, including those hoping to compete in the 2008 Olympics, to train abroad.
