An Open Letter to the Karate-DO Community - PART 4
Dear Forumers (Ladies and Gentlemen),
It has been my sincere and humble intention, when I have tried to convey and SHARE some of my understanding of the way Karate-DO IS, should and hope shall be in the West , following the call of Mr.Mattson to closely examine and give comments on The Open Letter to Karate Community as given by Mr.Morris. NOW, those who follow my advices carefully, MIGHT have immediately been struck with the VERY FACT that Mr.Morris addresses Karate Community, and I address Karate-DO Community and it is in THE UNDERSTANDING of DO, that lies the clue to the PROPER UNDERSTANDING of Mr.Morris's letter. (And it is for me a GREAT MISTERY if Mr.Morris has left DO out on purpose, as I have not met or spoken to him. If he has left that out on purpose, THAN this is a proof, THAT he posseses COMPLETE UNDERSTANDING of Martial Arts.
I kindly thank Mr.Mattson, THAT by means of these pages, I was directed to read Mr.Morris's Open Letter, as I am not frequent "surfer" ,and I could have missed it. BUT it is of UTMOST importance to ANYONE that engages himself into Karate-DO to read THAT letter and NOT to refuse it, or call the the respected Author "a dude", and NOW I CALL UPON THOSE to properly IDENTIFY THEMSELVES and if THEY HAVE ANOUGH GUTS AS those, I have menthioned in my PART 3, MAKE a PUBLIC APOLOGY to Mr.Morris. This is due to the fact that many of you considered me as a kind of Mr.Moriss's Attorney because I have openly declared (and because of that have been met with some doze of sarcasm from your side too) that I agree with all the statements of his. And by doing so, I DID not MAKE an enemy of him, although my intentions were to explain in due course my different views on THAT very SUBJECT.
Due to the fact, that I am not one of those experts, who had previously written indepth books on the subject and are respected wordwide and I believe there are none amoung forum participants (with the exception of Mr.Mattson and I apologize if I have offended anyone), I HAVE DECIDED at THE VERY BEGINNING of my first post TO TRAY TO CONVEY THAT DIFFERENCE in simple language, everyone can understand. I once again beg you, for your understanding, that English is only third language of mine, and THAT I will correct any of my statements, if improperly placed, due to the fact that I write this without having time to re-read it at all, or give it to hands of any lector.
There were some posts which reflected author's belief that I may pretend to be some crazy yuppy, who has got a strane idea in his head to believe he is an reincarnation of some of those ancient Masters, that so many karate-ka worship like gods. I hope you can believe my words as I have said before and CONFIRM once again that my Karate Skills are very average and THAT I PERSONALLY KNOW MANY EXPERTS WHEREBY I CAN ATTEST MYSELF AT THAT VERY POINT OF ENCOUNTER THAT THEY EXCELL ME IN THEIR MARTIAL ART SKILLS.
BUT remember: Karate-DO is not measuring the HEIGHT of someone's SKILLS but the HEIGHT of SOMEONE'S UNDERSTANDING. And as I have previously stated, everbody had a chance to say so before, and of course ATTEST by HIS VERY EXAMPLE, that he is not some phoney expert hiding behind computer and implanting sentences from all those books written BUT that I am a lively person WHO responds to each and every action of yours. But do not ask me to give you again a verification of my LIVING KARATE-DO (just a small joke), but I may wish to ask some of Okinawan Experts for their kind acknowledgement that I am a true person, if readers are maybe in disbelief.
Since the famous "KICK-IN-THE-BUTT BOMB", I have received a lot of e-mail, some warning me that I shall be properly stopped by FBI, some convincing me that I had insulted many sincere people (and I have apologized myself publicly several times), some commenting that I furtner continue to offend people's good feelings (which I consider questionable), and THREE EMAILS: ONE from a person who also has been met with all the difficulties to find proper guidance and he claims now he has found one, ONE from a good person, I believe already has proper understanding and high excellence and ONE from person encouraging me to continue as this is the first time he had LEARNED Karate from written word. Now, this is not true of course, as I may myself attest, that by reading books I have learned a lot, but such is a nature of a human being that unfortunately, many times good books are left on dusty shelves, and people rather engage themselves in lively conversations. BUT what worries me more is the fact, there has been so far so little response from your side to what I write AND I would wish if you just confirm with a small YES, if you are interested to read what I write. AND maybe, it would be usefull for the sole purpose of encouraging people of sincere intents in Western Countries, that a NON-Okinawan tells and attests his first hand experience in such matters as UNDERSTANDING and PROPER WAYS of DO. If anyone is interested in this regard I shall be more than happy to convey my views (but to say in those simple words of mine - The reasons I love Karate).
Than I shall just place from time to time next part to Bill's forum and in the meantime you make your observations. At the beginning of next part, I shall comment your observations (if they need to be commented) and in such a way ALL THE FORUMS CAN GO BACK TO THEIR LIVELY DISCUSSION AGAIN without interference.
I ask so, because I am AWARE OF MY LIMITATIONS. I have spend enormous time during last few days, driving back and forth from my home to the aiport to check responses and try to prove that I am sincere karate student, by placing my comments to those topics, I have felt I may have something sobber to say, or just to confirm my position or to give support to those views I consider correct. But I shall be kicked out of my job soon, if I use office computer for my personal reasons for such extended periods of time and my family has been realy upset as I have neglected many of my duties. And they also need my support in this turbulent times when some people claim 3rd World War might start in my very neighbourhood). So, once again, I would like just a small NO or YES in reply and than YOU continue as you have done before.
This is the beginning of my Part 4

Open letter to the Karate-DO Community - PART 4
What is the Essence of Attitude and Etiquette in Karate-DO
Respected Audience,
If you shalI kindly permitt me, I would take myself a privilege to describe herein my very own understanding of this subject.
First of all, I would like to point out that Attitude and Etiquette must be lived and demonstrated by the very example of oneself. I can assure you, that it is never too late for somebody, who truly wish to excell in Karate-DO, to start contemplating on this subject, due to the fact that we, human beings, have a rare gift - we can continuously learn to the very last stages of our life.
Due to importance of this subject, I also take a privilege to quote a famous sentence by Dr.X, which relates exlusively to the importance of the subject itself (and I love how Dr.X has formulated it, I still learn proper English expressions):
Quote:
"Since not everyone has apparently discovered the basics of etiquette, let us, once again, review them. I will type slowly for those taking notes in crayon."
End of quote
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I must admitt, that I may have been more lucky than many of you in this respect. My first teacher in Karate did not possess any considerable amount of technical skills so preached nowadays and which so little have in common with this subject. He was in fact a 2.kyu in judo and a student of psychology and during one of those rare oportunities that our citizens were granted to specialize abroad, he had learned a bit of Karate during his 3-month stay in Germany. I shall properly identify him here as Mr.Janez Rojšek, a name with no reference in Martial Arts, but a man with a lot of common sense. What it appears to me nowadays, he probably learned some Wado-Ryu basics and than conveyed that little knowledge to us, but what is far more important, he did so as a responsible person with a lot of common sense. When I had begun my very first classes in February of 1971 at the beginning of the 4-month course, we were simply told, that karate can be a very dangerous discipline, if not practised by one's utmost care, whereby we have simply listened to that advice and did not try to harm ourselves nor others. To ensure that we shall obey his instructions in the outside world, Mr.Rojšek has made a wise trick on us, as he declared he had to turn all our names to the police to register, so in case of any misuse from our side, we shall be properly punished. What I have found later to my very suprise, that there was no such requirement from the Authorities, and of course he did not turn our names BUT by this little trick wisely ensured, that we were properly scared not to make any rambling out there on the streets.(just a remark - and this is basicaly the same as mr.Van Canna has now adviced to one of you - not to teach any specialized self-defense skills to public, a notice I may have not found before and many of you either, attested by the very fact that one of you have posed such a question, and that also attests that some basic facts have to be repeated on and on.)
(hopefully shall continue)

Igor:
I would like you to continue posting and participating, but please don't lose your job, or create problems with your family over it. We can wait until you have a minute to drop in and comment. I think that your viewpoints will be appreciated. We are just getting to know you. I admit my first impression seems to have been wrong, so let me join with you in discussion of some of the issues you have addressed over the last while.
1) You entered these forums somewhat taken aback by the reactions or lack of reactions, to Mr. Morris' web site. I think that our reactions were based on the fact that he was not the first we have seen to cry that "Everyone else is a fraud and I have the one and only truth. You must believe me because I have said so. I do not intend to explain what I do, just follow me blindly." Now this is exceptionally unfair to Mr. Morris who I have never even conversed with, but the fact is that was the impression his WORDS left with me.
That karate and other arts may have their frauds is not a shocking message to most on these forums. We have heard it before. Many would agree, and agreement stimulates little discussion. His "exclusive" training clause did shock many. People who post on open forums tend to be the type who want to look around and learn. (Note how many cross trained individuals post here.) So this clause did indeed bring comments.
2) You seem to be under the impression that you engaged Bill in a self defence scenario through words and have taught him, and all of us, a resounding lesson. Perhaps Bill might have some different comments, but I just don't see it that way. If I may explain my viewpoint, then maybe others will express theirs, and you might clarify for us yours.
First of all you entered the forum as a few others have in the past, lashing out indiscriminately (we now know this was a prepared strategy).
Bill, having known you from before and as the moderator of this forum, tried to calm things and promote a good healthy debate.
Many of us have seen this approach before and sadly, despite all efforts and possibilities, very little was gained trying to discuss anything. This is why, I believe, many chose not to take part.
Gladly you stuck it out and we are learning that you are different from our first impression.
However, before we got to know you better, there was the KICK-IN-BUTT-BOMB. Sadly, these posts were worded as if you intended to use a bomb. Sadly, these posts were made at a time in North America when many people are pointing to the fact that some children had made it very clear that they intended to go to their school and do murder. Many are asking why no one believed them, why no one did anything, why no one listened? If you had been a real nut and followed through with a real bomb would people not be pointing to your posts saying "but he told you he was going to do it". So Bill took action. So let us review this as a self defence scenario:
1) An apparent predator aggressively approached.
2) Bill tried de-escalation techniques to resolve things peacefully.
3) The predator turned it up and began to make serious (and as we have sadly seen, easily carried out) threats.
4) Bill took immediate, decisive action to shut the predator down and take him out, thus ending the threat.
Now in hind sight, that lovely 20/20, someone might say he over reacted, but in a self defence situation you have to go with what your gut says and react. Anyone can second guess afterwards from the couch.
So, I am a little perplexed as to what lesson you feel was taught to us? Please understand that this is just the way I saw it. I am very interested in what you were going for and felt was achieved.
3) "What is the Essence of Attitude and Etiquette in Karate DO."
I liked this post. I would think and hope that everyone gives cautions as they teach. Perhaps we forget this as we post our thoughts on these forums and reminding us is a good thing.
One of the many reasons I am looking into Tony Blauer's material is for his training methods on de-escalation techniques. I have had some personal exposure to this, but under specific circumstances. Nothing systematic or teachable.
How many times do we tell our students that the best fight is the one that never happens. We tell them to avoid fighting. We teach them what to do if they they cannot. But do we ever teach them HOW NOT TO FIGHT?
Good stuff, keep posting,
Rick

An Open Letter to the Karate-DO Community - PART 4
Dear GENTLEman Rick Wilson,
I welcome your "bravery" to be the first one to overcome the "fear" of addressing me straightforward with questions of yours.
It is a sound message to me, confirming that I am not the "monkey from the jungle" (can't recall who menthioned that previously).
I shall respond to your all questions:
1)Your observation of Mr.Morris's clause on membership is correct but please take into carefull consideration something very unusual:
1)Mr.Moris required 100 GBP lifetime membership fee, which some Instructors I guess take for one private lesson
2)to drop all connections with previous instructors (which is not so unusual as I have explained above and you folks deal a "hell lot" with this problem of affiliation to one and only organization although there are individuals which carry out healty interchange BUT read carefully "healty".
Now combination of both appeared to me very unusual and I would not jump any preconclusion. This is a way of the warrior because this were only words of course we do not have to see any real danger behind, as I have seen much more furious exchnages or statements on this forums BUT in the APPROACH to analysing this subject ONE SHOULD allways be carefull like a warrior before deciding any further step. ..
sorry..I have a customer to serve (I am still working in my office as usually...will try to come later

....so, Dear Mr.Rick,
aha,just a small correction..
healty should be I think amended to "healthy"
In answer to your questions under
2)main point and subpoints
I really do not have time to repeat all I have, previously expalined on the above subject question. I also gave a reference book to study of Funakoshi Gichin Sensei
read the story and if Mr.Mattson can bring back to public the thread "All those applications.." (of which I believe is technically no problem due to the fact that my student here in Slovenia has recovered it(he's got some technical brains too)
YOU should be able to carry out a comparative analysis which may result into what I would some up(but am not allowed to say on this forums anymore..)
IF YOU TAKE A VERY CLOSE LOOK INTO A HORSE****.....WHAT DO YOU SEE Mr.Rick?
oupps just got a phone call that my wife is not feeling well...I might not be able to continue but hopefully I will

Hello Igor,
Now that I have stopped trembling and have come back out of hiding from under the safety of my desk, I'd like to ask only two questions:
1) Can you tell us a little bit about your background.
2) Is the Karate Klub Kranj your website?

Dear Mr. Igor:
No bravery was needed, only the hope of a healthy conversation and decent debate. I even thought we might have one and then you ended your last post with:
"IF YOU TAKE A VERY CLOSE LOOK INTO A HORSE****.....WHAT DO YOU SEE Mr.Rick?"
If the best logic you can produce is to call me a horse's ass then you disappoint me.
GENTLEman Rick
P.S. I truly hope that you wife is feeling better.

An Open Letter to the Karate-DO Community - PART 4
Dear Mr.Moulton,
I have kindly asked to pose just one question at a time, as otherwise it is difficult to focus someones's attention properly.
So to apply the Universal Law of Nature,
I have thrown up in the air,
a 2 cent coin of mine,
and it landed on the very hand of mine,
showing the other side of that very coin.
Yes, Karate klub Kranj is the address of
The Sports Club, where I teach along side
12 other assistant instructors of mine.
The Page has been put up by my students,
to give me some suprise,
and it did suprise me as I took the very first look at it.
This youngsters were so "damn proud" of
being able to put up a page that they declared at first, all the others "fools".
I was quick to give them a lesson of mine,
and I believe you may confirm to the
US public, that the chief editor of this
pages, Mr.Andrej Kozuh also received some warm advices of yours in regards of proper
English (his knowledge is still lacking a lot, but he slowly improves)and
that your advice was immediately followed.
I have took a quick look a those pages right now to check if some "rambler of mine" has not published some indecency and would also
kindly ask the future viewers to give me a
SOUND SIGNAL if they discover anything
that is offensive to public in order
to exterminate the evil at its very root.
Thank you

Dear Mr.Wilson:
No bravery is needed indeed,
to convey a healthy conversation
and decent debate.
I even thought,
we might have found one GENTLEman
but
then you ended your last post with
the best logic you can produce
and saddly disappointed us all.
"IF ONE TAKES A VERY CLOSE LOOK
INTO A HORSE****.....
WHAT ONE MAY EVEN SEE Mr.Rick,
IS NOTHING BUT A HORSE****".
P.S. In spite of your words I am honoured
to say that my dear wife,
although being severaly shocked,
by my actions during last few days,
when she was informed,
that even FBI is on my back,
had a nervous breakdown yesterday,
but with support of our best friend,
we were able to take a proper care
of her, so she needs some rest,
and is staying of of the job today.
She is just a Librarian in Childreens Library
of our hometown and today some kids will
be missing some nice fairy tales,
she is telling them once very week.
Igor

Dear Mr.Wilson,
Ladies and Gentleman,
I beg you Mr.Rick and Respected Audience
to forgive me for my words in a previous post. There is no excuse but only my hope you can understand that I am just a simple citizen who in the rush hour of business in the office has made such a mistake. When I incidentaly looked back
at my post I would like EVERYONE, including Mr.Rick to read it as follows:
No bravery is needed indeed,
to convey a healthy conversation
and decent debate.
I even thought,
ONE might have found ONE "GENTLEman"
but
then last post sadly ended with
not the-best logic ONE can produce
and saddly disappointed just ONE.
I can assure you that,
it is less than a split of a second enough, that a fatal mistake as
explained above can occur
and ONE's might be at stake.
THEREFORE I THANK MR.MATTSON WHO KINDLY
REMINDED ME NOT TO REFER TO ANYONE
SPECIFICALY AND SPEAK IN VERY GENERAL TERMS
AND I HAVE TRIED TO FOLLOW HIS ADVICE
IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY
BUT I BEG YOUR UNDERSTANDING AS
ENGLISH IS ONLY THE THIRD LANGUAGE OF MINE
AND I HAVE BEEN UNDER CONSIDERABLE STRESS
A COUPLE LAST FEW DAYS.
I AM SINCERELY SORRY.

Dear Forumers,
This is my last post for today.
I believe I might went NUTS (crazy you know).
It must be something with the weather
influencing people.
First I had a bad night and could not sleep
and start to write some poetry,
which is generaly not harmfull.
Than I come to office and found
e-mail from mr.Mattson, asking me
if I am prepared to answer questions
on POLITICAL SITUATION. i SAID NO
BECAUSE I have never been in any political
party nor did ever show any interest in
politics.
Than I go nuts and post some poetry on
Street Survival Forum. Ok at least that
does not represent any harm.
Than I begin to formulate my answers
in strange verses. Well this is not
reasonable to Bills forum which is to deal
straight forward with common-sense Karate
questions. And what I offered in this regards
is to answer only and ONLY questions related
to Karate and I shall give my point of view
from the DO aspect of the Art.
All the rest you may forget.
Second,
I have ordered yesterday to have internet
connected to my home (and the company said it my last a week that they can connect me), as I can not continue to misuse office machinery for much answering this "private" questions.
I shall be simply kicked-out of my job. I hope you in the WEST understand that clearly.
SO, I might be absent for a few days
like Bill and than hopefully we can continue
some HEALTY, COMMON SENSE DISCUSSION
ON KARATE AND its DO Aspect.
My very best regards
Igor

Dear Mr. Igor:
I seem to being having a real problem getting a clear read on your character. You ended a post to me with the comment:
"IF YOU TAKE A VERY CLOSE LOOK INTO A HORSE****.....WHAT DO YOU SEE Mr.Rick?"
This was capitalized, which in internet speak means you SHOUTED it, and seemed unconnected to any previous comment. There is a very old joke in English:
"What do you see when you look at a horse's ass?"
"Why, your reflection, for you Sir, are a horse's ass!"
It seemed very clear to me that you were calling me a horse's ass, so I called you on it. Both Bill and Sensei Mattson have posted that they thought well of you when they met you back in the 80's. This will probably mean little to you, but because of them, I am trying to give you the benefit of the doubt by asking for clarification. As English is your third language (I have enough trouble handling one, by the way), you may be unaware of the common usage, or are you perfectly aware?
You posted that we should ignore your previous post, because you should have only used "ONE" instead of my name or "you". You respond to my comment about your having called me a horse's ass with:
"IF ONE TAKES A VERY CLOSE LOOK INTO A HORSE****.....WHAT ONE MAY EVEN SEE Mr.Rick, IS NOTHING BUT A HORSE****."
You lost me. What do you mean by this comment?
Rick
P.S. I am glad your wife is doing better.

Dear Mr. Igor:
It seems that you have indeed revealed your true character to me.
I made this comment in another post:
"If we take a positive approach to these forums. If we look at it as if everyone who posts anything on these forums has something that they wish to offer. If we look at it that most people who post are also looking to learn. Then the exchanges on these forums should be respectful, productive debate. Anyone who does not offer something, or is not seeking to learn, is just a flamer and should be ignored."
I can only blame myself for not labelling you as a Flamer sooner, but then it was my own time to waste I suppose. It is clear you do not wish true debate and cannot abide having your statements subject to scrutiny or question. Any further waste of my time would be intolerable and unproductive. I shall therefore take my own sound advice, for me you cease to exist, I shall ignore any further nonsense from you.
I wish you and your family well, I just wish to have nothing further to do with you.
Rick
P.S. JD yes some day I may mature and come to find the truth -- I was right.

To be RIGHT or WRONG,
to be SOFT or (hard)STRONG,
one even said,
HALF-HARD and HALF-SOFT,
did he mean?
