Hello:

My name is Kerry Jolly, and I am a reletively new student learning to practice Uechi-Ryu, from who I consider to be a very gifted teacher, Steve Morgan, (my husband, I should add...) Having recently received my brown belt, my heart has turned toward some of the deeper aspects of Uechi.
My question to everyone, is reguarding definitions. I believe that, while everyone is expressing their opinions reguarding the Dan test, it is important for those students hoping to approach this forum someday, whom are still learning; to understand just how everyone in the "group" defines, those things which we will be tested for. Of coarse, each student hopefully knows, their own Sensei's, thoughts; but what about other members of Uechi. Mainly, those people whom will be evaluating us.
How do you define, in a spiritual term, the Tiger, The Dragon and the Crane. Where exactly do you look to catch a glimpse of someone's spirit, and once you've seen it, what do you use as a criteria, to judge its value, and or strength.
Thank you for your consideration, I would love to hear your thoughts... Please reply to, konchin@hotmail.com.
Sincerely,
Kerry Jolly

Hi Kerry:

I had the honor of sitting on the most recent IUKF dan test board.

"Judging" others is never easy. This is especially true when judging the existence or intensity of someone's spirit!

Being a fighter, I am often asked to define "IPPON" (the hard-to-achieve/score "full point").

In reference to your question(s) let me give you the same answer that I usually give them: When you score an IPPON, you, your opponent and EVERYONE ELSE in the arena knows it--PERIOD! The same is true of spirit.

When you have good spirit, it cannot be hidden. When you do not have spirit, it cannot be faked.

Lastly, be sure to visit our summer camps, regional workouts and many other intructors' dojo before attempting a dan test. Only then will you get a sense of the standards or "definitions" you seek.

Keep training,

Gary

Amen, brother Gary.

You cannot know it until you see it and work with it. And even after you go to a camp and regional or two, you won't even know you are "getting it"....until one day you look back and you realize you aren't the person you once were.

Looking forward to working out with you and your buddies one day, Kerry.
