Hi Jay,

I just wanted to let you know that I received all the email on the rules, regs., etc. and am reviewing the same.

I have attended some of the events in Rhode Island principaly sponsored by Kenpo organizations, but also an open event. My grandson was competing (8 yr. old) in both kata and kumite and is now a green belt in kenpo (no uechi school near his residence).

In some of these events, I noted that some competitors, also competing in more than one event, were allowed to wear a low rank belt in some events under one style say as a novice and later enter into an intermediate event as a student of a different style. Yet some of the schools did not permit this, and this was a cause of parental complaint and officials did not ban this type of competition. Here is a clear case of unfair play.

Under the IUKF rules this would not be possible at an all Uechi event.

What would happen if the IUKF permitted mixed style competition (events other than Uechi).

Mixed Style’s

Post by JaySal »

Hi Alan:

You bring up a great point….

I have also seen this in the past. It is totally “Unfair”,, to all
The kids. This will NEVER happen in our tournaments for
Two reasons.

1 – We run an all Uechi Ryu / Shohei Ryu tournament. This
is NOT an Okinawan tournament. It is very clearly specified
that is an IUKF Sanctioned - Uechi Ryu / Shohei Ryu tournament
series. No other styles can compete in the tournament. Even if they
study the other style at a Uechi Ryu / Shohei Ryu dojo. They can only
perform Uechi Ryu or Shohei Ryu… NOTHING ELSE …

2 – It is very clearly stated in the rules… Which I copied below…

RANK DEFINITIONS:

A. Rank Rule - Belt Rank: A competitor must compete at the
highest belt level they have earned in the martial arts.
A competitor can never compete in a division of which he/she
had not earned that rank. Once a competitor competes as a
black belt legally, he/she must always compete as a black belt.

A competitor can never compete in a lower belt division than the
level of belt he/she has earned in the Martial Arts.

B. Rank Rule - Mid-Season Promotion:

If the competitor starts the tournament season
as one rank, such as a Novice (1 to 12 Months training),
and then during the tournament season is promoted to
the next rank, such as an Intermediate (13 to 24 Months training),
the competitor must advance and compete in the higher ranking
division. In addition, any and all points the competitor has earned
will be divided in half, and will be carried over to the new division.

Take Care ...
